Hello,

I have identified my ancestors in the Valuation Office books via the National Archives of Ireland. I note that in October 1846 all was well and my GGG grandfather and his father each had a farm and were paying their rental.

However, by January 1848, my GGG grandfather Gleeson was dead and his widow was written into the book. But things were not ok. The home of my GGG grandparents and their cowshed were "down". Likewise my GGGG grandfather's House, Stable, Piggery, Cow house and Barn were "down" and crossed out. All their names were crossed out. The same for most of the neighbours.

I am reading into this that there was a series of evictions by Coles Bowen and my ancestors were amongst the vicitims - am I correct?. I am also trying to find any references in newspapers or books to what happened in this period in Knockane, Templedowney but to no avail. Is there an 'expert' on the history of what happened at Knockane or any eye witness reports?

I am also concerned that my GGG gradfather's death may have resulted from these evictions but can find no information.

Could you possibly point me to more information please? Thank you!

  • Hi, is this "Knockane" the place near to Toomevara?
If it is......Look for the Toomevara Evictions.
I have seen statement in a book I will see if I can find it. If you google/search Henry Cole Bowen you may find some info there.
Deaths up to 1864 were not registered. Records for BDM were introduced in 1864.You do find some death records in Parish Books if you are very lucky.

    I saw this.........................it doesn't state the year.

I just searched this nursing home name and it opened in 1994. There must be Gleeson people in the area  today.

    You say.............
