Seeking information on Owen Lafferty Family.  His USA naturalization papers indicate that he was born at Cartage or Carthage Mountain in Donegal, in 1804.  He left Ireland during the great famine, traveling to Nova Scotia, and from there to Boston.

  • Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The RC parish records for Culdaff parish do not begin until 1838 so no baptismal record would be available for Owen.

I checked the 1828 Tithe records for the parish of Culdaff and there were a number of Lafferty records but only a widow Lafferty in Carthage. Possibly Owen's mother? Most of the Laffertys were in Moneydarragh townland.

The 1857 Griffiths Valuation head of household records for Culdaff civil parish https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/donegal/culdaff.htm  shows a number of Lafferty records in Moneydarragh but none in Carthage.

  • Roger,

Thanks so much for your speedy reply.   The widow, Lafferty could very well be his mother!   He had married before leaving Ireland.   His wife's name was Bridget Susan (surname unknown, but nickname was Shuey), and there were at least two children born in Ireland before immigrating.  Barney was born in 1844 (another account has 1842), and Rose, in 1847.  They sailed on 5 April 1847 from London, and arrived in Boston in August of the same year.

No luck finding a baptismal record for Barney or Rose on the subscription site Roots Ireland. Also did not find the marriage record.  The Culdaff parish register shows a baptismal record gap between November 1841 and June 1847 https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0358  which may explain not finding the baptismal records and the marriage records do not start until 1848.

  • Roger:  Thanks again for your help!   I found Owen Lafferty's headstone in Clinton, Iowa, USA, and it states that "Born Donegal, Parish of Glengad."   Donegal was spelled, "Dongell," so Glengad may not be accurate.

There is a small fishing village in Culdaff civil parish called Glengad  https://searchdonegal.com/glengad-donegal/   so I think you have a better idea where your Owen was born.
