Hello
I have just signed up to irelandxo and the Banagher Community.
I have been researching my Irish side of the family for many years but have not been able to find out about the family before they immigrated to Australia in1841.
And they immigrated such a long time ago !
My Great Great Great Grandfather was Thomas Bernard L’Estrange born about 1818 Cloghan, King’s County.
His death certificate says he was born - Park’s House, King’s County.
Thomas immigrated to Australia 1841
His immigration document from the vessel - Berkshire - name his parents as Patrick and Mary L’Estrange (Cloghan /Farmer).
Three of Thomas’s siblings were also on the Berkshire.
Peter L”Estrange and his wife Catherine (nee Cochrane) and two children, Thomas 4yrs and John 3 years.
Peter was born 7 Oct. 1810, a carpenter from Gallen, King’s County.
Bridget L’Estrange born about 1819, a single woman, nurse maid and needle woman.
States on her immigration document that her father Patrick is dead.
James Rigney and his wife Catherine (nee L’Estrange) and four children, Thomas 8 years, Maria 7 years, Bridget 4 years, and Patrick 9 months.
Catherine L’Estrange born 26 August 1912 from Cloghan, King’s County.
Their character reference is Martin L’Estrange and all L’Estrange siblings are Roman Catholic.
I have found on 1st. January 1807, Patrick L’Estrange married Mariam Lynch in the Gallen and Reynagh Parish.
Why did the four siblings immigrate at that time ? What were the circumstances ?
Were there other children in this family that remained in Ireland ?
Is this Catholic L’Estrange family a branch from the Protestant L’Estrange family at Moystown ?
I am really wanting to know more about this family in Ireland.
I understand that it is such a long time ago and may not be possible.
Thank you for reading my email.
Hope to hear from you.
Kind regards
Joanne

Hi Joanne . . .
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out . . .
I am not sure we can offer much help . . . on dates that far back . . but however. .
When I search " Roots " a paid Irish search engine . . for the name L'Estrange . . . I find some notations
for the location of Kings County (a.k.a. Offaly ) ..which includes the Town of Banagher . . and Tisaran . . (see below).
___________________________________________________________________________
Next I searched Land Tax records . . a.k.a. Tithes Applotment (1823 - 1837 )
http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp (see Tithes (4) below )
The L'Estrange families . . are registered on lands . . at Ettagh and Kilcoleman . . . both of which Parishes are situated
close to the Town of Roscrea in County Tipperary . . . about 16 miles from the town of Banagher . . .
When I search the Irish census of 1821 . . I find that family name . . in Birr, Oxmanstown . . showing a large residential grouping
i.e. Physician Service Of Kings County Militia . . . Birr the Town and Garrison . . situated approx 6 miles from Banagher . .
these people would be of the Ch.of Ireland persuasion . . . known to . . Lord and Lady Ross ( the Parson's ) of Birr Castle ..
There are NO census records for Kings County . . until . . .1901 . . .
_______________________________________________________
then again . . . in 1911
_____________________________________________________________________
The Parish of Lusmagh . . . and Cloghen . . . are both in close proximity to Bangher
______________________________________________________________________
I am not sure if any of the above is useful . . . you appear to have done sterling research . .yourself . . .
I know we have a researcher in the Town of Banagher . .Catherine ???. . . whom I will alert to your query
Sorry I couldn't be of more help . . but hopefully you will find something of value . .
Cheers . . Eamonn.

Hi Eammon,
Thank you for your reply and the research you sent.
I will have a good look at it all.
There seem to be many L'Estrange's in the 1901 and 1911 Census....someone must be a relative !
I just can't make a clear connection !
Appreciate any piece of information you send.
Cheers Joanne

You may already be aware of this, but Thomas Bernard L'Estrange, with the parents you mentioned and two of the siblings you mentioned (plus two other siblings) all have records in the Family Search database. FamilySearch is operated by the LDS church, and is free to use. The site is located here: https://www.familysearch.org
You have to create an account to use it, but they don’t ask for much personal info, and no missionaries will contact you or anything like that. The database does not have separate family trees, and is essentially one huge tree of linked records, in which there is a single record for each person, with a unique identification number (although sometimes people unknowingly create duplicate records for the same person, which you can merge when you spot them). You can search by name, but also by that number, and the number for Thomas is LHH7-N3D. Once you are at that record, you will see how easily you can move up and down the tree by clicking on the names of other people who are shown. You ccan also see who has contributed the info in the records (look in the right-hand part of each screen, and it looks as though one or more people in Australia have added much of the info.
The records say that Thomas was born in Cloghan. There is an electoral division of that name in Offaly, and you can see more info about it here: https://www.townlands.ie/offaly/cloghan/
As you will see, there is also a townland by that name in that electoral district, to which there is a link at that site.

In case you are interested, it looks as though the L'Estrange family in Offaly may actually be of Irish Catholic origin (though they may have converted at some point, perhaps to save their land). In MacLysaght's Surnames of Ireland, he says the following: "Lestrange: This is the only form now in use of the Westmeath name Mac Conchoigcriche (border hound), formerly anglicized MacEnkegry. The adoption of the modern anglicized form may have been due to the existence in Westmeath of an English family called Lestrange who settled there in the sixteenth century. Map: Offaly and Westmeath."

Hi kevin45sfl Thanks for your response. I have looked into the information on family search. Still trying to find out about this (Catholic) L'Estrange family from Cloghan in the early 1800s. Looking for information about where they lived and their lives in Cloghan, before immigrating to Australia. Thanks. Joanne
