Hello:
I visited Gort in 2012 as part of the Ireland Reaching Out and met Sr. Mary de Lourdes who gave me some information about my family who lived in Gort in the early 1900's.
I'm considering spending more time in Ireland when I retire soon. My Grandmother, Nora(h) Farrell, aka Honoria Farrell, lived in Gort (info from 1901 and 1911 Census) with parents Fergus Farrell and wife Mary, nee Henderson. I'm trying to locate a birth certificate. for Nora. Born 10-02-1893. Baptized 10-03-1893, Roman Catholic.
Does anyone have any suggestions on where I can obtain this? I think her parents were married in Beagh County and the names Ballycahalan Parish/Kilbeacanty had been mentioned.
Thank you so much for any information!

Jo Ann,
You should find the record at IrishGenealogy.ie - Civil Records. Free

Hi McCoy:
Thanks for your information. I did just try searching in both their civil records and church records, with no success. The following year, her brother was born at the Workhouse in Gort...Is there a way to search their records? Perhaps she was born there..
Thank you,
Jo Ann

Jo Ann,
There was a daughter Bridget born in 1897, and died at 22 months in 1899...both at the Gort workhouse. I believe that in those years it functioned as a hospital, and people didn't live there permanently. Their son John was also born there. I could not locate Nora's birth record on the civil index nor Roots Ireland.

Jo Ann,
Subscription Site www.rootsireland.1E has a record of an Honoria Farrell baptised in Kilbeacanty on October 3rd 1893.
It records her birth in Ballycahalan on October 2nd 1893. Parents: Fergus Farrrell and Mary Herdisson.
Ballycahalan is in the Civil Parish of Kilbeacanty in the Union of Gort.
Sponsors: Michael Glynn and Bridget Farrell.
It would appear that Honoria's birth was not registered with the Civil Authority.

Thank you so much McCoy and Carolyn!
Do you know how one goes about becoming an Irish citizen when one's Grandmother's birth was not registered with the Civil Authority?
I will check out the roots.ireland link for her baptism.
Thank you!

Jo Ann,
You should get a certified copy of the marriage of Fergus Ferrill (Farrell) and Mary Henderson from the parish in Beagh.
According to Roots Ireland they were married on June 30th 1892 in Beagh.
Witnesses: John Greene and Kate McDonagh.
Note the different spellings of the surnames in Roots.
Apparently the marriage was not registered with the Civil Authority.
You can check with the Department of Foreign Affairs as to what records they will accept.
