Looking for ancestral family info

Hi there,

I first wanted to introduce myself. My name is Glenn Scollins, I'm 31 years old, and have lived in Boston all my life. My family and I traveled to Ireland last November and we instantly fell in love with everything about the country. We are planning another trip to return this year, but we were hoping to get some into on our actual descendants and visit the parishes they hailed from.

I've done a bit of digging and found that our irish roots on my mother's side go way back in Galway, specifically Carna and Lettermullan. According to, my great great grandparents Thomas Gorham born in 1847 and his wife Bridget (Folan born in 1951), hailed from Callowfeenish, Carna, Galway. Their son Richard Gorham born in 1897 and his wife Mary Mulkerrin born in 1899 came through Ellis Island in August and September of 1920 respectively. They later married in 1927 and settled in Boston where our family has lived to this day.

I don't want to bore you with details but when tracing past my great grandmother's Mary Mulkerrin's lineage, it seems we have roots that run deep within the Mulkerrin/Mulkerins, Folan, and Walsh families of Lettermullan. I can list names if need be, but according to family search it goes as far back as Patrick Walsh (born in 1780) and Peter Folan (born in 1790 and married in 1810). I attached a photo of the tree I currently have access to.

I was interested if anyone had additional information on these families (Gorham, Mulkerrin/Mulkerins, Folan, Walsh) or knew if there were still any decendants living in the area. Gorham is my mother's maiden name so any info we could get beyond Thomas Gorham would be great. I'm doing this as a surprise christmas gift for my family but any information that could be provided would be a huge help.

Sorry for the novel, but regardless of whether or not you can help, I look forward to starting a dialogue. Visiting Ireland was a life changing experience for me and I look forward to learning more about where I came from and how I got where I am today, thank you!

  • Hi Glenn,

My Flaherty family also comes from Lettermullen, and I have ties to Carna & Callowfeenish through my gggm Mary Mulkerrins who raised her family on Inishbarra. There are many possible 'cousins' who have connected through the Facebook Group "Carna Area Genealogy..." where they discuss families, DNA, and immigration of our ancestors, plus local community events. The Lettermullen Heritage Center is run by a gentleman named John Bhaba Jack O'Chonghaola, and he's in another Fb group I belong to, Galway West Genealogy. My DNA & family's kits show matches to Gorham, Walsh, and Folan, among many others since all my paternal side comes from the west islands. You can reach me here, or pm me at Kindly, Diane Flaherty Martin
