Hello,
I am hoping to find my grandfather from his first marriage to an Elizabeth Hesen/Hazen. attached is the information that was at New St. Joe's cementry in Cincinnati Ohio
Bessy/Elizabeth Mulligan BIRTH ABT 1844 DEATH 7 AUG 1871 • Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio, USA
I know very little about her and my grnadfather who went on to marry after Elizabeth died.
What I do know and my theory is John married Elizabeth/Bessie ( Hazen or Hessen) shortly after arriving in Ny or married her before leaving Ireland. She gave birth to Mary in NY. Mary's Her death certificate says She was born Sept 29 1873 , but census has her birth date 1866,1868, 1865.
The the family shows up in Northern Kentucky on the 1870 census. They have Two other children James who was born 1869 and Thomas born 1867, both have place of birth as Ohio. I have not found their birth certificates but have the death information from the New St Joes Cemetery.
Thomas died in 1870 according to the New St Joe cemetery record he was 3 years 3 months old he does not show up on the 1870 census since it was taken in June a month after he died parents are listed as John and Elizabeth
James died in 1875 he shows up on the 1870 census but not on the 1880. The cemetery records show that he is 5 years old parents John and Ann, who he married in 1871 . I believe Elizabeth was his mother not Ann they wed in 1871 James was already on the 1870 census with Elizabeth. He may have only known Ann as his mom but she did not give birth to him.
St Joseph's cemetery has a James mulligan that dies 2-15-1875 John and Ann as mother, There is an Elizabeth buried in the same section. Who has to be his mothers since all the plots were purchased by John Mulligan.
The cemetery record has Elizabeth/ Bessie with two different spellings of her last name. Parents are Anthony and Elizabeth Hesen on one document , and Pat and Elizabeth Hazen on another document. It also says she came from County Mayo Ireland.
Any crumb would be a treasure ,
Thank you

I think the surname in Ireland would have been Hessian or Hession or a variant of these names. This surname was found in Co. Mayo and there were 56 Hession/Hessian households shown in the Griffiths Valuation records around 1855. Unfortunately, there was no Anthony Hession/Hessian records. There were five Patrick Hessian/Hession records. No way to know if any of these records relate to the father of Elizabeth.
I searched for an Elizabeth Hession/Hessian baptismal record on the subscription site Roots Ireland but did not find a record. Very likely she was baptized in a parish that does not have records back to 1844 and earlier.
Have you considered DNA testing? Perhaps you will have matches with 3rd cousins who have more information on the origin of the family in Co. Mayo.

Hi Roger!
Thanks again for the help! I figured out that the name had to be spelt wrong, I was getting no where with the way the names were spelled on the old cementry records.
I just didn't know what was the correct spelling . I will correct my tree with the correct spelling. Maybe I will get some hits.
Yes I am on all the web sites if there is an online line tree out there I am on it!!! and I have had two different DNA tests at Ancesrty and FTDNA, and uploaded them to all the various sites. I should go an update the ones that are out there . I have not looked at them in a while . I mostly stay on Ancestry and Family search.
Hopefully I can find someone with clsoe DNA and a Mulligan in their line! I appreciate all the help this site has given me. I will keep digging. I found my Partridge and Carroll and Griffin!
I am looking forward to visiting in July. If I can’t find my Mulligan, I still have a Connelly, Egan, McNellis, McCormick, Telford, Gaffney, to look up!
Much appreciation,
Jan

Roger,
Somehow, I came across the attached record. It is for an Anthony Hession and Honor who suddenly burned to death in 1874 I think it's in Mayo? I also found three Anthony's Hession marriage records none to Elizabeth. One to Honor, Mary, Bridget. All on Roots Ireland. The Honor marriage took place in 1832 in Shrule RC Parish. I wonder if this is the couple who burned to death, then I saw that the other two marriages were in Ballinrobe RC Parish which is where the fire took place. I am wondering if there is a connection to my Anthony here since there seems to be a collection of them here, and it's an unusual name . Could Elizabeth be a middle name ? I also was wondering if the Parishes were close. Thanks for looking for me

Jan:
Anthony and Honoria Hession that were burned to death were living in Rooaunalaghta townland which is in Shrule civil parish so the 1832 marriage was likely for the same couple. Shurle parish is part of the Ballinrobe registration district.
Sounds like you are in the correct general area.
