Hello, I’m looking for any help finding the birthplace of my 2x great grandfather, Edward Ambrose, who was born in Ireland around 1833. My aunt believes he came from Limerick around the Newcastle West area but is not sure about that. He may have been called Edmund at birth. He emigrated to America around age 20 and lived briefly in Kentucky with his wife (possible Marie Ward) where my great grandfather, Robert Ambrose was born, before moving to Chicago. I don’t know if they were married in Ireland or the US. I do have a 4th generation DNA match on Ancestry.com with an Ambrose connection from Mahoonagh, Castlemahon, but that match also has a Dowling, which is my great grandmothers name so I’m not sure if it’s the Ambrose or Dowling That matches. I have been trying to decipher online church baptism records but having no luck and can’t even read many of them. Is there anyone out there with an Edward Ambrose fitting this description? Thanks, Jennifer Manning

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I located a baptismal record on the subscription site Roots Ireland. I note that the oldest son was named Robert which matches his grandfather's name. Let me know if you think this is the correct record. I also found an 1834 marriage record for Robert Ambrose and Hanora Connors. No townland was shown on the two records. The 1850 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Co. Limerick showed only one Robert Ambrose in Ballinena/Ballinina townland Newcastle civil parish.

Hello Roger,
I just got off the telephone after speaking to my Aunt and she is confident that this must be out Edward's baptismal record. Yay! Thank you so much for locating this record! This also explains the Ancestry DNA link with Mahoonagh. Are you able to tell the name of the church in which he was baptized? I would love to be able to visit the area next time I'm in Ireland.

Roger, Thanks for the information and the links. The first link did not work but the second one did. Im going to look through the Mahoonagh church records in the National archives trying to find out more details about his family and any siblings. Thanks again! Jen

Another try. http://www.limerickdioceseheritage.org/Mahoonagh.htm
If it does not work, Google limerick diocese heritage and scroll down to Mahoonagh.
