Hello All,

My mother's great great grandfather was Timothy Duhigg, son of Bartholomew Duhigg and Honora McEniry, born ca 1825 in Bruff.  His brother was David Duhigg who was born in 1811 there and married Ellen/Elinor Riordan, only daughter of Denis Riordan of Ballinston or Ballinstona in 1835.  David and Ellen had Honora, Mary and Denis, the latter born Bruff 3  Nov 1840.  Something happened to Ellen and she was taken to the Limerick Asylum, where she was listed as "incurable" but many years later her husband learned that she was released at some point.  I suppose his believing she would never leave there prompted him to move and about March 1850 he and his children came to Lyndonville, Vermont.  I hope to learn more about this family during their life in Ireland and what happened to Ellen.

Timothy married Margaret Halloran, daughter of Michael Halloran and Catherine Connolly, on 4 April 1842 at Bruff.  By 1848 they had 3 children, John Timothy (1845),  Hannah/Honora (1846) and Patrick (1848) and they made the trip to New Brunswick, Canada, from where they came down to Northampton, Massachusetts to settle.  I have read many parish books in Bruff and the area trying to find Timothy's baptism, to no avail. Would anyone be able to suggest why is doesn't appear in the records?  His family were all Catholic.

I know from copies of deeds that Bartholomew's father was John Duhigg and that he died between 1801 and 1835.  I know that Honora McEniry either had a father or brother named Denis McEniry.  Timothy and David, brothers, had a sister Catherine, called "Kit" and she was left behind when the brothers came to the US.  In later years David tried by mail to find her without luck.  I wondered if she married and moved to another county, perhaps Tipperary?

Many thanks for any suggestions or help. Dot

  • Consider that "Bruff" may be the nearest market town (usually the "address" given by emigrants) and not the parish.

For example, residents of the Civil Parish of Glenogra,  Civil Parish of Ballinard), the Civil Parish of Knockainy and more, would marry at Bruff Church.

You may need to extend your search beyond Bruff to the surrounding parishes it served (beyond its own).

    Hope this helps!

  • You might get some guidance from the map at this link.  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0870
I know there was definitely a Duhig family in Dromin & Athlacca parish until at least the 1980's and may be still there.
