I am looking at locating any distance relatives we may have in Ireland, I have come to a dead end when it comes to these relatives, my grandmother was Ruth Beatty ( Huston), her father immigrated from Ireland to Philadelphia Pennsylvania where he met Emma Mc Allister and married her, they then moved to Saskatchewan, Canada.

I appreciate any help at this point.

  • Perhaps you can give us a bit more information.

When were Hugh & Matilda Jane born (approximately).  Did they remain in Ireland or did they leave?

What’s the connection between Ruth Beatty (Huston) and Hugh & Matilda? When was she born and where  and when did she die? Was Beatty her maiden name or her married name?

    What denomination were this family?

  • The KERR-JF public member tree on ancestry has the following:

Hugh Henderson Huston was born in 1855 in Ireland. He married Matilda Jane Mccarroll on 5 March 1875 in Antrim.

They had nine children in 18 years. He died on 25 October 1931 in Antrim at the age of 76.

No sources are provided but the marriage apparently took place in Ballyweaney, Antrim.

Hugh's children were born in a variety of places: Ballymoney, Ballyportery, Clough Mills. He lived in Killagen Antrim in the 1901 & 1911 Irish Census.

I searched in the Irish phone book for Huston in the places above but found none I'm afraid.

Here is the 1911 census listing

    HustonMaggie19FemaleDaughterPresbyterian G A

    HustonJohn17MaleSonPresbyterian G A

    HustonEdith14FemaleDaughterPresbyterian G A

Regrettably we don't get a lot of Irish people looking on the site to connect with overseas relatives so I'm not sure what to suggest other than wikitree Huston genealogy page or dna testing.

  • Here’s Hugh’s probate abstract. The will itself will be in PRONI in Belfast, in paper format. It should give you an idea of what descendants he had.

Huston Hugh Henderson of Ballyportery Culcrum county Antrim farmer died 7 October 1931 Probate Belfast 5 November to Wilson Hanna and John Huston farmers. Effects £134 5s.

In the 1929 Valuation revision books, Hugh is listed as having plot 5a in Ballyportery South, which was a 31 acre farm. A William Houston was farming there in 1861, and also in the tithe applotment records for 1832, so it looks as though it’s probably been a family farm for some time.

    http://www.irishgenealogyhub.com/antrim/tithe-applotments/loughguile-pa…

    Also noted this:

The Will of John Houston late of Ballyportery County Antrim Gentleman who died 9 January 1895 at same place was proved at Belfast by Mary Houston of Ballyportery Widow one of the Executrixes

The will itself is on-line on the PRONI wills site, and mentions Hugh H. Houston as owing him some money, as did Hugh’s brother William.

Hugh had 11 children of which 10 were alive in 1911:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Killagan/Ballyportery__South/128221/

The Ballyportery farm today is up a lane off Kilmandil Rd, Dunloy BT44 9BH. No Houston/Hustons listed there in the current phone book, but that’s not conclusive as many people aren’t listed these days. I suggest you knock on the door to see who is there now. Even if it's not a Huston they may know of some living in the area.

    Elwin,

I thank you for that information, I utilized Google maps, zoomed in to view, happens to be an implement dealer there, I emailed them and it appears that they know there are Houstons still living on Kilmandil Road.

My next question is why the sir names would be different ... Our family name is spelled Huston he responded with sir name Houston  I'm my earlier searching it is noted that mispelling was common and that there are variations of these surnames.

Am I safe to assume that this maybe happening here

I thank you in advance for the prior information and any new information you may have

Definition of Proni? Is that last will.

    Thank you, Dawn

  • Dawn,

The idea of a single or correct spelling for a surname or a place name in Ireland is a 20th century concept. Before that, there was no consistency. Names were spelled phonetically and each variation was down to the whim of the particular person recording the information. You will often see the spelling change as the records go back. This rarely indicates a deliberate decision to alter the name, nor even a mistake. Not everyone was very literate, but even when they were, exact spelling simply wasn’t something they bothered about.

PRONI is the Public Record Office for Northern Ireland in Belfast. It’s where most of the key records for that area are kept. Wills for example. See:

  • hello, just found your request by accident, Hugh Henderson Huston lived/owned the family farm where we now live, my partner worked for him from a young boy and eventually Hugh passed the farm to him, Matilda was his sister , his brother Robert lived on the neighbouring farm, most of the info regards Ballyportery on old documents, however it ajoins Ballyportery road by a lane but purchase of another smaller piece of land  enlarged the farm and in living history has always been kilmandil road. As for the surname Hugh was very determined for it to always be recognized as Huston and not Houston, hope this helps, please feel free to get in contact, would love to hear more information on the family.

Wow! I can't believe that I am only reading this today! As I see you have commented in February!

I have been speaking with Molly Huston, I have received her number from a gentleman whom has a business near the farm. From our conversations she was married to a Robert Huston, had 3 children with him, I have spoken with her 4 times and I have always been unsuccessful in speaking with her son whom still lives at home!

We are leaving for Ireland on Monday April 30th, I hope you can read this prior to my departure, I find it so interesting that you are living on the original farm...that's great, I have so many questions.

Looking forward to your response, please let me your name, I didn't see it in your comments

  • hello, just received your message, my name is Linda, have some old pictures, though not many, the original farm house of Hughs is still here as is the byre, hay shed, it has been modernised in some ways although the old home stead of McCarroll is still in situ in our bottom farm, not much left but we have left it as it stands.
