Hi, My name is Sharron Nadeau and I live in Canada, I am looking for the grave (for birth & death info) of my great grandfather Edward Griffith of Johnswell. He was married to Annie Hayes, she was from Carlow, their daughter Elizabeyh Hayes Griffith was my grandmother. Any help with Edward, his death date (somewhere between 1916-1919) and/or siblings would be much appreciated. I do know his father's name was John Griffith.

Thanks!!

Sharron Nadeau

  • Hi Sharron,

Could you please post your message on the County Carlow page here: http://www.irelandxo.com/group/county-carlow/parishes

There are Roman Catholic church records available for the diocese of Kilkenny: St. John's (Ossory). These date from 1809 for both baptismal and marriage records. You can find these at the National Library of Ireland (NLI), Pos. 5030. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.

There is a very useful website with lots of links to genealogical and historical information about Co. Kilkenny. You can findd this here: http://www.theirisharchives.com/counties/view/1/Kilkenny

You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at. Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38). Microfilm copies of the books for all of Ireland are available at the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/tithe-applotment-books-and-the-primary-griffith-valuation/ or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS). http://www.connorsgenealogy.com/Kilkenny/StJohnsTithes.htm

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864 however. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

You can information about the frequency of the name in the mid-19th century and any other variant spellings of the name here: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/

Inscriptions for graves can be found on many websites such as: http://www.interment.net/ or http://www.historicgraves.ie/ or

For St. John's there are other places you could check: St. John's Kilkenny, John Street Lower, Church of Ireland, Irish Genealogical Research Society (IGRS) Collection, found at the Genealogical Office (GO).

    - Radestown North, IGRS Collection, (GO).

    - Kilkenny, Dublin Road, Roman Catholic, IGRS, GO.

As it might still be within living memeoty, you could also place a letter in the local Kilkenny newspapers and see if you receive a response.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

    Sinead Cooney

    Genealogist (Ireland XO)
