My great grandfather ×3, James O'Neill was born in 1855 in Ireland. He shows up on the 1880 US census in Stamford, Connecticut making him 25 at the time. It says he was an Ironroller. I have no idea when he arrived or what Parish he was from. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you, Kary O'Neill

  • Hi Kary,
It's probably a good idea to search for James in all the available U.S. records before turning to Irish ones. Right now, you don't have enough info to find him in Irish records.
Have you looked at James in all of the available U.S. censuses? The 1900 census gives month and year of birth. In censuses, you might find him living with a sibling, a parent, a cousin, an in-law--all of which might give clues to identifying him in Irish records. Do you have his marriage and death certificates? They might include his parents' names. His will? Headstone inscription and cemetery interment list? Newspaper obituary?
Do you know his children's names? There were Irish naming patterns and so his children's names might give you a clue to his parents' names.
