  • Hi. The reference to a Johanna McMahon piqued my interest. Have been trying to find a Johanna for some time. My great grandfather Thomas McMahon and his sister Ellen from Doonass/Kildoorus County Clare came to Australia on 3 October 1864 on the “Scirocco ll”. A Johanna McMahon was their “sponsor”.

I have been told a Johanna M sponsored an Ann and Con McMahon to Victoria in 1856. Same Johanna?? Not a really common Christian name about then?? Suspect Johanna had links to our McMahon’s.

Your mention of McGrath raised my eyebrows. In July 1927 a Patrick McGrath (father was Thomas, mother’s maiden name Bridget O’Neill, born County Clare) died at Tumut, NSW aged 77. He had married Mary Ellen McMahon at Tumut. Mary Ellen McMahon’s parents where James and Johanna McMahon.

All a bit of a long shot but……!!
