Looking for information on my g g grandparents Thomas Brown and Catherine (Kate) Daly. Their daughter, my g grandmother Mary Ann Brown, was baptized in Killavullen on 12th December 1858. I have a copy of a letter, written by a Fr Smithwick on 10 September 1923, certifying this. Presumably Mary Ann needed this proof to obtain a pension in England.

In 1871 the family were in Bedwellty, Wales and included Mary Barrow, age 66,  b 1805. She was given as "niece" on the census but possibly Catherine Daly was Mary Barrow's niece.

  • Molly:

I think the civil parish is Monanimy. The Griffiths Valuation survey was conducted in that parish in 1852. There is a Thomas Brown listed in Tooreen townland.http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/cork/monanimy.htm

  • Hi Molly

I have in my records a Catherine Daly baptised in Kilavullen 13-10-1825.  Parents Denis Daly and Jude Collins, sponsors John Crowe and Johanna Brien.  Address - Culdorcha. Civil Parish is Monanimy as Roger suggested.  Could this be your Catherine.  I got this information from Michael Daley in the US who is doing a lot of research.  It might be worth your while contacting him to see if you have any corresponding information. You can tell him I told you to contact him.  His email address is mdaley@albany.edu

    Good luck with your search

  • Thank you, Brenda!

Molly, let me know if you are interested in conversing.

Denis Daly married Judith/Julia Collins on August 28, 1820 in Killavullen Catholic Parish.  The witnesses to the marriage were Daniel Callaghan and Timothy Daly.

    Their children were baptized: Denis (1823), Catherine (1825), Eugene (1827), Ellen (1828), Conor (1831), Eugene (1833), Ann (1837), Timothy (1842), John (1845).

These Dalys were active Whiteboy/Ribbonmen. They were identified on a suspect list of 1842.  They were evicted from the Pierce Nagle Estate, along with many other families, many of whom eventually found their way to New South Wales, AUS, and California, USA.

Timothy (b.1842) is my great grandfather.

    Best,

    Michael Daley
