Hi there

just wondering if anyone can share knowledge on my Leahy roots. I have managed to get back back as far as a John Leahy who  owned a shop and pub in Broad Street in Charleville in 1870s. He married a Catherine (Kate) O Donohoe (or Donohue) from Hospital whose father was Thomas and also a shop keeper. John Leahy' was born around 1840/41 and his father was also a John Leahy, listed as a farmer. Before John Leahy owned the  shop, it belonged to a Maurice Leahy (possible uncle?).

Kate and John had the following children:

Thomas (born 1875), David (1877), Ellen (1879), Maurice (1881), Frances (1883) and Henry , John (my descendent),

Godparents listed for the above children include a number  of Walsh surnames (Edward, Mary, Hannah and Edmund)

Other god parent names are Mary-Anne Meade, Edwin Erwin, Brigit Riordan  and matthew O Brien in case of help!

Any help greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Jackie Leahy

Hi Jackie welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Have you tried the civil records of www.irishgenealogy.ie? All the records from 1864 onwards are available, once you have the records you could build a family tree and you might find the connections to the Walshes and Erwins and O'Briens , it is of course also possible that these people where not related as neighbours or friends also stood in as sponsors.

I have checked the church and civil records from www.rootsireland.ie for Leahy's from Charleville and got 84 results between 1827 and 1883 but no John, it possible the family moved to Charleville from elsewhere. When I check the baptism records for a John Leahy born around 1840-1841 with father John I find 8 possible matches but all from Castlelyons or Doneraile county Cork.

There are still 4 or 5 Leahy families living in Charleville at the moment who could be related

Historic graves.ie has some information about Leahy families burried in Charleville's Holy Cross cemetry http://historicgraves.com/familysearch_map?term=&name=&surname=Leahy&in…

Hope this information helps you a bit and maybe there is another reader who recognises your information

Attached a picture of Broad Street as it is now, and the original marriage registration of John and Kate O'Donoghue just in case you do not have this yet

    Kind regards,

  • Dear Jackie,

I have also been tracing our tree back to John Leahy from Broad Street. I attach the gravestone inscription of said John Leahy from Mount St. Laurence cemetery, Limerick. This was erected by Henry J. Leahy, following the death of his brother Maurice in 1917. His parents (John and Catherine/Kate) are both interred there along with one other brother (Thomas). Therefore, both John and Catherine (Kate) are buried here along with Thomas, Maurice and Henry (and his wife Bridget and two daughters, Elizabeth and Nancy). There is also a Mary Leahy who I cannot trace and a dedication to the O'Donohoes (Dr. Henry and Margaret) "who died in America".

    http://mountsaintlawrence.limerick.ie/content/leahy-1917-6530

The gravestone gives the date of death of John Leahy as 1882. Catherine (Kate) Leahy (I understand with the help of the aforementioned  Dr. Henry and Margaret O'Donohoe of Hospital and latterly USA) moved to Limerick city following the death of John with her children and are recorded in the census of 1901:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Limerick/Dock_Limerick…

From the marriage certificate kindly supplied by Anne Marie, Dr. Henry and Margaret also were witnesses at the marriage of John and Catherine (Kate).

    Best wishes,

    Henry Leahy

  • Hello Henry - how fanastic that you got in touch with me. From what I can figure out, my father´s grandfather (Thomas born 1875), was Henry´s brother. It was quite a while ago when I did the research so I can not remember now why I said that about Henry, but I think it was because I saw documents where he was sometimes included as a child of John and Kate, while othertimes there was no mention of him, so I wondered was it because maybe  he had been taken in by the family, but was a nephew or cousin on something. I obviously got that totally wrong and apologies for that confusion. My father confirmed that his dad (who was also a Thomas) had cousins in Limerick called Henry and you may well part of that clann?

So we seem to be stuck then on getting past John Leahy and Kate O´Donohoe? I can only see John´s father was also a Leahy and I think he came form County Cork. Anne Marie from Mallow was nice enough to try and find out some more, but it looks like a dead end from my end. Pity - I am back to the 1500s on my mother´s side!!!

    Thanks, jackie

  • Hello again. I just spoke to one of my uncles and he is full of information!

He said he often visited "uncle Henry" and mentioned a place called "barencurra" (sp?) in Limerick. He also mentioned aunty Fanny (assume it is Frances).

Back to Henry´s side, he mentioned that he thought his wife´s name was Bridget Cusack and that they had many chidlren - he remembered a Bernice or maybe Bernadette, a Nancy who he said dies very young, Harry and John, and he seemed to think their professions were chemists, doctors and teachers? He said he attended the funeral of Henry Leahy a few years ago and met one of the sons there and got talking about the Olympian Cornelius Leahy, who we thought was no relation to ours, but that son believed he was... I am assuming you are from this Henry Leahy (son of Kate andJohn) clann, so you will have the accurate info yourself.

So it looks like the Henry Leahy who erected the  gravestone was the brother of my descendent. I apologise  earlier as I wrote that my descendent was Thomas. In fact he was a John Leahy. So John's siblings were: Thomas, David, Ellen, Maurice, Frances and Henry. Sorry for that confusion. It has been a while since I looked in to all of this!

    Thanks, Jackie Leahy

  • Dear Jackie, you're spot on with most of your information! I'd be delighted to hear more of your side of the family and see if I can fill in any more gaps for you. Best wishes, Henry

  • I was told about a Leahy pub connection in Charleville, so was interested in the above story. My family history from my grandfather (Information that was given to my uncle) mentioned his grandfather was a Daniel Leahy born Circa 1825 in Charleville.Interested if anybody has found a record of a Daniel Leahy in any records around that time period. My Great Grand Father (Son of Daniel) was another Henry Leahy so there seems to be a long family history with that name (My dad was also a Henry Leahy).

  • Hi John,  I would love to see if there is a DNA link between us, so if you have a test done on Ancestry or ideally a GEDMATCH kit number, I can check that? Is it possible to send me a pm? I can only go back as far as John and have no info on siblings, apart from a Johanna, Thomas and a Margaret (these names are based on sponsors of baptisms of John's children). It is likely he had more siblings so would love to look at the possibility of a Henry/Daniel.

    Thanks, Jackie
