My great great grandfather, Henry Carr b. 13 Jun-1830 Galway, Ireland d. 25 Jan-1903 Dublin, Ireland.  He worked for the Irish Coastguard, and was honoured several times for bravery and life saving.  He married Roseanna Quinn b. 1846 Galway, Ireland.

Their oldest son, John Henry, b. 1866 emigrated to the USA, settling in St. Louis, Missouri.

Their oldest daughter Mary Louise, b. 1864 emigrated to Canada, settling in southwestern Ontario in 1893.

Their second son, and my great grandfather, Alexander Carr b. 1868 Aran Islands and their 3rd son, Charles Hamilton b. 1870 Westport, Mayo, Ireland emigrated to Canada, through Boston, Massachusetts USA in 1885, arriving Aug. 10.

Alexander married Annabelle Montgomery, granddaughter of Samuel Alexander Montgomery b. 1797 Belnaclough, Co. Tyrone, Ireland.

Charles Hamilton went back to the Boston area at some point, where he met and married Minnie D. Whitworth.  They had one son, Charles Hamilton Carr Jr.  Charles Jr. married Elsa V, and had one daughter (that I know of) Jean Alice Carr b. 1925.

The remaining siblings of Mary Louise, John Henry, Alexander and Charles were William Francis b. 1871 (remained in Ireland), Margaret Jane b. 1873 (cannot find any record) and Samuel Adolphus who died at 9 mos of age and is buried with his mother Rosanna in Clifden.

Henry Carr had 6 siblings, and his father was also Henry Carr b. 1800 and mother Lucinda Carroll.

I have a lot of information on Alexander and Annabelle, and birth dates of all.  However, I do believe there are descendants of at least William Francis, and also of Henry Carr b. 1800 (my gr great grandfather).  It would be wonderful to connect to someone that might know of this family.

Henry Carr Jr. was a well decorated coastguard from my understanding.

As well, his son, Charles Hamilton Carr Sr.'s daughter could still be living.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

  • Hi Red,

I had a look for your Carrs.

on roots.ireland, a pay-per-view site, there is a birth of William Francis in 1871 and 2 marriages in 1896 in Mayo. It also has Mary Jane's birth 1873 and marriage in 1901.

I didn't pay to get further details but if you get the specific birthdates you can work out their ages in 1901 and 1911 then check the freely accessible censuses to choose the most likely options. Knowing the spouse' names would also help.

The 1901 census was done on 31st March  and 1911 on 2nd April.

Once you find the area you might want to check current phone books to see if there are any Carrs still there and drop them a line.

    I hope this helps.

  • Thanks for the info.  I have all the birth dates of the siblings for both generations.  I have been unable to find any more information about them after that, except for a few tidbits.

The marriages you mentioned I did not have, so that is a bonus.

I will see what I can find with that information and that website.

    Regards,
