My father has traced our roots back as far as he can with Canadian census data and parish records.  We are O'Toole's and our ancestors come from Tipperary and thereabouts.  Here's what we know:

My Great-Great Grand father and his wife -

1835 or 1836 – JOHN TOOHIL or O Toohil  was born in Parish of Bansha, barony of Clanwilliam in County Tipperary, Ireland. His parents were John Toohil and Honorah Ryan.

1853 – John emigrated to Canada

However, he didn’t necessarily continue living in Bansha right up to the time of emigration

The family seems to have been told that “John emigrated at the age of 16 from near the gates of Thomastown and the hills of Tipperary. He was a carpenter by trade.”

1825 – Michael Lundergan and Honora Daugherty immigrated with Peter Robinson settlers in 1825 on the ship “Fortitude”... took a farm in Douro township (Ontario, Canada) and later moved to Asphodel. They had twins in Douro circa 1835 – Margaret and John. Then they moved to Asphodel and bought a farm in 1837. John has a tombstone in Norwood (Ontario) cemetery from 1855, age 22. Margaret is certain to be Mrs John Toohil. (cf Peter Robinson’s Settlers by Carol Bennett plus Peterborough Land Registry )

- Michael and Honora originated in Parish of Templetenny, Tipperary, Ireland, as did several other Peter Robinson families. (cf 1850 marriage registration, Hastings parish, for their daughter Mary)

We are hoping to trace our family back further and find out if we have long lost cousins with whom we can network on ancestry and possibly re-connect.

  • Hello Chris

I too am a descendant of John O'Toole and Margaret Lonergan.  My great grandfather was his son Joseph Dennis, my grandfather was his son Michael, and my father his son John O'Toole born circa 1928, we assume in the Peterborough area.  As I was adopted at birth, I have very little information on the O'Toole family prior to emigration.

I combed through the Bansha birth records but could not find any birth record for John O'Toole.  I was however, able to find a record for a birth in 1830 in St. Canice's parish (Kilkenny) for a John O'Toole - parents James and Honorah Ryan.  The date of course would make him a few years older than the 16 years indicated in your information and on John's death certificate.  We have not been able to find a marriage record for John and Margaret Lonergan however.  I also note that Thomastown appears to be in Kilkenny so I assume the record for St. Canice's could be accurate.

I wonder if you have been able to gather more information on John since you posted in 2013?  I note that a researcher agreed to assist you. Any information would be appreciated.

    Thank you.
