Hello,

We have been trying for over a year to trace where we come from in Ireland.  I have heard County Cork but have nothing concrete to substantiate this.  What we do know for sure is that my great-grandfather's name was Joseph Noel Nunan, born May 7, 1890 in Quyon, Quebec, Canada.  His father's name was John Michael Nunan, and his mother was Mathilde or Mathilda Chevrier.  I don't know where John Michael was born as we can't find any information past my great-grandfather Joseph's baptism registry.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

thank you,

  • Bonjour Marjolaine!

ancestry has the birth entry for Joseph Noel Nunan as you probably know.

On the top of the adjoining page of the record it says parents are MICHAEL Nunan and Mathilde Chevrier. I then checked for Michael Nunan births on ancestry and got the 1851 Canada Census which has a family in Quebec: Michael Nunan age 4 (born 1847) and born in Quebec to James Nunan and Hanora Nunan both aged 32 and born in Ireland. There is another child Mary Ann aged 1 also born in Quebec and a name I can't decipher of another female Nunan aged 15.

If this is the right family then they must have arrived in Canada sometime before 1847.

I checked on rootsireland for marraiges of James Noonan to Honora and got 4 matches (attached).

There is one in 1841 and one 1842 both in Limerick. It could even be a duplication! The other 2 are way too late.

rootsireland is a pay site so you need to register and pay to get the details such as parents' names and parish.

I couldn't find the family on later censuses.

  • Go raibh maith agut ? Col!

Your response and your research is tremendously appreciated!  I do have the baptism certificate of Joseph Noel Nunan, but we could not find his parents marriage certificate.  I will defenitely look into rootsireland to see if the price is feasible.  Again, thank you so much!

    Marjolaine
