Thomas had a brother Samuel.

Thomas, Susannah and their 2 sons Samuel and Thomas emmigrated to Canada about 1884.

Thomas Thorpe was listed in the Canadian census as a shoemaker.  Thank you.

    Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Have you tried looking in Church records for information? If you can find Thomas and Susannah?s birth record it will give you their parents? names.

Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. For Newtownbarry parish, follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Wexford&parish=Newtownbarry&churchid=583

For information on Church of Ireland records check: http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/

www.familysearch.org has a collection of Irish church records available online so you may want to do a search here.

Civil registration began in Ireland in 18664 so you may also be able to find information in these records. You should be able to find Thomas and Susannah?s marriage record here. This sometimes gives fathers? names and occupations. These records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:

You can search the indexes to these records online at:

Some other websites that you may find useful are:

I hope that this is helpful. Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

  • Hello,

My name is Daniel Thorpe. My granfather was Thomas Thorpe, born in 1884, Newtownberry, Ireland and emigrated to Canada and married Margaret Lapointe in Pembroke, Ontarion in 1913.

I found that his father( my great grandfather), Thomas Thorpe, was married to a Susanne Cameron (Cowman?) and my father, Thomas Gordon Thorpe(also), who was borm on April12, 1914 and passed away at 89 years of age,at Sudbury, Ontario, had also confirmed to me that my great grandfather came from Newtownbarry, Wexford, Ireland. My grandfather, Thomas Thorpe, had a sister named Margaret Thorpe who married on July9,1906(born around 1886). My great grandfather, Thomas Thorpe and Margaret Thorpe were two siblings from Thomas Thorpe and Susanne Cameron(Cowman?).

You indicated that Thomas Thorpe emmigrated to Canada around 1884. This would indicate that my grandfather,Thomas Thorpe, who was born in 1884, was a baby when he arrived in Canada from Newtownbarry, Ireland

You may wish to confirm that Thomas Thorpe(great granfather, born 1857 and emigrated at 27 years of age?) had children named Margaret Thorpe and Thomas Thorpe(born 1884) in the registry at Newtown barry. My great grandfather, Thomas Thorpe, also had a brother named Samuel Thorpe who also emigrated to Canada.
