Peter Murtagh married Mary Smythe Jan 29, 1838. Subsequently had 6 children: Peter, 1840; Margaret, 1842; Patrick, 1844; John (my GGfather), 1847; Mary, born and died in 1850; Edward, 1852; Michael "Murtha", 1857; Ann "Murtha", 1861. Don't know Peter's occupation, but he seems to have leased land from Richard Grenville and James Corcoran and re-leased portions to fellow townsmen in Ballynacarrigy, Rathcronan, and Granard. Any information about these Murtaghs/Murthas, or explanation of how these leasing arrangements worked would be much appreciated!

Hi Pat Wales, is Wales your name or do you live in Wales?
Here goes...............There are several Peter Murtagh's in this area. The one in Rathcronan, this being a townland in Granard is in County Lonford.
Records overlap in Counties due to baronies and Diocese. This never married. As you said yours was in Streete, then the Parish is Kilbixy, Westmeath. This is between Ballynacarrigy and Mullingar.
This is his record in Griffiths Valuation in 1854 as you said Landlord was James Corcoran.
www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch…There is a Peter Murtagh in 1901 in the same place, must be the son Peter, he wasn't married at that time.

He was in House number 4
page 2 of the census shows the list, on the top is a Kate Murtagh in house number 1.http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001258893/
Looking at this Kate, it says there are 2 x Kate's in the house one is the head the other a sister-in-law.
