My name is Elizabeth Ratigan and my great-grandfather Patrick Ratigan came from County Roscommon to the United States around 1848.  On his naturalization certificate, he stated that he was from Bellfield in Roscommon.  I haven't been able to find that community so I'm not sure which parish it might be.

I am traveling to Ireland shortly [August 9-22] [I wish I'd found this community earlier!] and am hoping to find more about him and perhaps even find a few Ratigans.

Patrick's parents were Edward Ratigan and Anne Finneran.  He was born about 1830 and was the oldest child.  His siblings were Anastasia {Ann}, Mary [married William Finneran], Margaret [married Patrick Rowan], Thomas [married Ellen Heaney and lived in US, I believe] and Edward.  Any information about any of these people would be much appreciate.

I hope to come to Roscommon on Friday August 10 or Saturday August 11.  Suggestions for what to see or do would also be appreciated.

Thanks, in advance, for any help you can provide.

  • Hi Elizabeth

there is an area  called Bellfield in Derrymore, Roscommon. It appears to be in the parish of Taughmaconnell and was a small estate belonging to the Murphy family who were landowners there.  The Rattigan name appears in the parish register for the 1860s and there is a Patrick and Thomas Rhatigan listed in Griffiths Valuation in hte townlands of Togher and Knock , Tuaghmaconnell in hte 1850s.  Hope this is of help
