Hello,
I am looking for any information that you may regarding my Thomas Gannon and Mary Margaret mcGrath.
I have a Church marriage Recod that shows a marrige between Mary Margaret McGrath and Thomas Gannon 11-Feb 1887.
It states that he is a widower so this is probably his second marriage. His occupation is listed as constable RIC. i do not have a badge number and I will try to obtain some info from the RIC. His fathers name is Michael. There is a birth certificate for Emily maude Gannon on 2-27-1893. At this time it appers that he is no longer with the RIC but is pensioner and has a grocery store on Dominick Street in Galway. He also has a daughter Lizzie (Elizabeth) that i believe is from his 1st marriage that i have been unable to locate.
I have a buriel record for Mary margaret that shows she died at age 36 in 1897. I have a death certificate for Thomas that shows an age of 55 or 59 at death in 1901.
I also have a civil Marriage to Mary Keane (Clybawn) that shows her age 30 and Thomas age as 43 on Feb 23-1898 with a child listed as William Francis Gannon born 7-11-1900 and a female child Mary Kate gannon born Mar 26, 1899.
I would like any additional information or papers that can be located for the Gannon, McGrath or Keane families.
Particular interest in any siblings that Thomas gannon may have had.
Thanks

Hi Peggy,
You have left this message in the Longford County forum. I suggest you re-post it in the Galway County section. What parish are you trying to connect to? You appear to have more detail than you are writing here...

Hi Peggy,
I spoke with someone who has lived all their life on Dominick Street and they did not remembered a Gannon's shop on Dominick Street however they did remember A small shop owned by a woman called Hanna (Hannah) Gannon. That shop would actually be in Raven's Terrance. The shop would have been about 10 feet from Dominick Street.
After she died the shop was combined with a neighboring Pub (Coynes) to form McGuire's shop as it is today.
She could remember Hannah Gannon hanging handkerchiefs on a line across the road to help sell them. She also remembered another woman who she guessed lodged there. She was called shorts by the locals because although she was elderly she wore short dresses.sometimes she was called sweet sixteen.
Her remains would have gone to the Pro Cathedral and her records would now be held at the Cathedral.
I looked at the census 1901 there is a Raven's Terrace on the census William who was married to a Hannah Gannon Two of his children in Galway in 1901 were born in the USA. He is described as a shopkeeper.and there is a Thomas Gannon married to a mary and family live in 15 Dominick Street. He is described as a Publican. You can see there were other sons and daughters.I see why you went with Longford here as he was born in Longford.I found one thomas gannon father Michael Mother A Farrell born in 1846.Slightly out with the dates. Some of their children were born in Mayo. This would tie in with being in the RICThere is a Baptism Cert cert for a Michael Patrick Gannon Father thomas mother Margaret McGrath 04/01/1888 in Ballinrobe RC ParishThere is also a civil Birth cert for James Joseph Gannon Born 02/11/1889 Baptised 10/12/1889 His address is the Constabulary Backs Ballinrobe Mayo Father Thomas Gannon occupation constable R.I.C. mother Margaret McGrathI also found a civil birth cert for Sarah Margaret Gannon Ballinrobe Barracks born 01/12/1892Baptised 30/12/1892 and same details so he was still in the RIC in 1892I cannot see Mary Kate on the census 1901.Did she die?I cannot find a death cert for her.Where did you find a death cert for thomas Gannon?I see the Latter Day saints have a death cert for a 55 year old dying 1906.BTW in Galway Keane is often pronounced Cane.Although the ages do not match for the wedding to Mary Keane and his census returns in 1901.If what you are saying is right he married three times. In the 1911 census there is no Gannon living in Number 15 Dominick Street. Here is a local article about Raven's terrace that mentions the GannonsClybaun is now a suburb of Galway but it would have Keanes (farmers) living in the area until recently. There are still many McGraths living in Rahoon now.Kilbeacanty Galway

Thanks for the information! I recently visited Ireland and went to the Registry of Births, Deaths and marriage in Shantalla and that is where I obtained the death certificate. I had a typo in my communication listing his death as January 1 when it was January 6th. We aslo had information that the Galway Arms was where his grocer store was located. There is a picture on the wall at the Galway Arms of Thomas Gannon and his 2 children William and Catherine. The article is from the Galway Advertiser July 22, 1999 and states that Mary took the children to Pitts. PA after the death of Thomas. The picture is of the Gannon Grocer which I believe is now the Galway Arms. I will try and obtain a copy of the picture from the Gallway Advertiser.
Thanks!

Mike,
You are correct! I pressed the send button in error. I received a response from Pauline and I sent her all of the information that I had to date. I believe she may work with you?

Hi Peggy,
Thanks for that. The adveriser have their archives online and free here is the link to the Gannon's shop article.
To clarify my earlier notes There were two Gannon families they were actually on opposite ends of the street. The local oral tradition has a memory of the other Gannons.
The census of 1901 identifies the age and birth locations of Thomas Gannon and family.Using that I found one Thomas Gannon father Michael Mother A Farrell born in Longford. But the dates are a little out.1846 instead of 1849.Above I forgot to say that was in Longford.
Those children born in Ballinrobe, mayo are from his marriage to Margaret MaryMcGrath while he was serving in the RIC there.
I got these details from rootsireland.ie
The age from the marriage cert you mention does not agree with the census 1901 .Could it have been 48 in the marriage cert .
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000810355/
Rather than the typo being January 6th rather than January 1 you may have meant 1906 rather than 1901.Otherwise the photograph in the advertiser dated 1905 is not of Thomas Gannon. This correction would tie in with the LDS records i.e. dying in 1906.
I cannot see a Mary Kate Gannon in the census .I was wondering if she had died?
I found a Lizzie A Gannon Father Thomas born in Ireland in the USA census 1910 although again dates are two years out.

Hi Peggy
I am wondering if I am duplicating work you have already done.If so could you let me know.
I have two possibilities for the family that Lizzie A came from. Both would have other siblings. This would mean that Lizzie was not his only child from his first marriage but she would be the only one living with him at the time of the census.Have you any information that could shed some light on this?

Hi Peggy McCoy,
I'm Alice Gannon-McKinley and I'm the grand-niece of Hannah Gannon, the grand-daughter of Hannah's youngest brother Joseph Gannon (aged 9 in the 1901 census). I enjoyed very much reading the above tit bits of oral history of my great-aunt Hannah. I am also looking into the Gannon family and would love to get any additional information on the Gannon family. In reading about Thomas Gannon, I'm trying to understand if there is any relation with two Gannon families who lived around the corner from each other. I know that William Gannon, Hannah's father came from Co. Clare but am at a loss as to what parish he came from or if he had siblings. I do know that his father's name was James and his mother was Mary but that's all. I have more information on the Gannon's at Raven Terrace if you are interested. If you come across any information in your research about the Gannons around the corner, please let me know :-)
All the best with your research.

Hello Alice McKinley,
I would love to send you the information that has been gathered on my family. I 'm not sure where Raven's Terrace is located. My GGF Thomas Gannon had a grocer store which now has a pub called the Galway arms. Hopefully this is posted I am not very good with this site! Would you prefer to exchange e-mails. I am currently living in Vermont but grew up in Boston, Ma. Do you know any Gannon's from Malden, Mass?

This is my family! Thomas Gannon was my Great Grandfather. My Grandmother was his daughter, Sarah Margaret Gannon born in 1892 in Ballinrobe and I have letters from her discussing the location of her house on Dominick Street. I researched her childhood a bit in Galway 1976 while she was alive and she sent me details of her life in her letters. They lived above the store and it did eventually become the Galway Arms Hotel. Thomas Gannon was married (2nd wife) to her mother Margaret McGrath and she was born in Ballinrobe (I have her birth certificate). Her mother Margaret died young and Thomas remarried. Thomas and Margaret (McGrath) are buried with a gravestone at the site in the cemetery at St James Church "on the road to Newcastle", just across from Lough Corrib.
After her mother's death my grandmother, Sarah Margaret emigrated to the US on "The Boat" from Queenstown, changed her name to Margaret S. and later married John Devlin, my Grandfather in Boston. He passed early, leaving her widowed with 2 boys and she went on to live until 1986.
I met several relatives while visiting in 1976 and would love to track down more details on the famly. Margaret McGrath's sister Julia lived in Galway and was the mother of Peter Greene, who became Mayor in the 1950's.

Hello,
I am the GGD of Thomas Gannon, granddaughter of James Joseph Gannon I belive is the bother of Sarah. My father is James Joseph Gannon. We also visited Ireland and went to the graves of Thomas and Michael and to Dominick Street and the Galway Arms. I would very much like to have a copy of Sarah Margarets letter if you still have them. My niece Debbie in Florida is doing lots of research on the family and has accumulated quite a bit of information. If you would like to continue with this let me know.
