I’m hoping to visit Loughrea sometime in the next 6 months, and would like to visit any older cemeteries that may have any of my ancestor’s graves,

Patrick James Carroll [my great grandfather] was born in Loughrea in 1855, migrated to San Francisco in the 1870s and died there in 1925. His parents were Simon Carroll and Catherine [Trena] Curley, or Curly]

He married Mary Margaret Carr, who was born in the parish of Ballymacward and Clonkeenkerrill in 1857 [don’t know date of marriage], she also migrated to SF and died in 1923. Her parents were John Carr and Mary Dilleen.

Trena Curley may have had a sister, Ellen Curley, who married John Qualter, one or both likely also associated with the parish of Ballymacward and Clonkeenkerrill.

Which cemeteries would be appropriate to visit and what is the best way to get to them from central Loughrea. I won’t have a car.

Thanks,

Mike

  • Mike,

Please see attached list of cemeteries in Loughrea and Ballymacward - Courtesy of Find a Grave.

You will need to narrow down the list for possible results - dates of deaths.

Civil registration in Ireland is from January 1st 1864. You will need to check parish records for any earlier death.

You will need transport and you are dependent on the state of the weather.

  • Thank you for this information. Without a car, are there local buses that might go by these cemeteries?

    All the best,

    Michael
