Hello. 

I have been searching for my Tully roots in Co Roscommon for a few years. (It is old family "knowledge" that they came from Co Rosc before moving to Annagh parish, Co Mayo.)  A couple of years ago, I got a DNA match with a descendant of a Mullowney family of Lowberry Cross (Patrick and Catherine who were either siblings or cousins.  Patrick born c 1854 and Catherine born in 1851.  I have not found a birth record for Patrick. Catherine's parents were James Mullowney + Anne Blighe and birth records for her siblings show they lived in Lowberry. 

There was a John Tully & Co in Clougher in the Tithe books,1832.  There were no Tullys there in Griffiths or afterwards that I could find.

I was excited to find a marriage of Thomas Mullowney + Mary Tully in 1852.  Children found were Patrick (b.1854), Margaret (1860) and James (1865).  The year of Patrick's birth seems to fit with the probable birth year of my DNA match, Patrick (as noted above).  "My" Patrick Mullowney was living in house 28, Clogher Upper, in 1901 census.   I'm not sure if Thomas + Mary's son, Patrick, is the same one who was living in Clogher Upper, for 2 particular reasons:   1) He didn't name a son, Thomas (at least I couldn't find one) and 2) my DNA match in the U.S. thinks our match comes from Catherine Mullowney who married Patrick MaGuire of Ballykilleen.

  • I'm sorry, I didn't finish this post!  The Grandmother of my DNA match was named Alice.  Her maiden name was either Mullowney or McGuire (depending on which of the 2 families she came from).  Both Catherine Mullowney (wife of Patrick McGuire) and Patrick Mullowney (wife Ellen) had daughters named Alice, born just a few years apart from each other (1894 and 1897).  I'm hoping she is Alice (b.1897) as this would solve the DNA match with a Tully!

    I'm wondering if there is any advice you can give me about this  as I don't know where else to search.  Also, to find the family of this Mary Tully who married Thomas Mullowney.

    The other question I have is why Lowberry doesn't seem to be in Griffiths or in the 1901/11 censuses.  Do you know if it was merged with another townland for these records (such as Altore or Clogher?).

  • Based on the 1901 census reports (Histpop.org) Lowberry townland, Kiltullagh parish appears to have had no occupants at the time of the 1901 census, or the previous one in 1891, which is probably why it does not show on the census, no sign of it in 1911 either. The townland is shown on Griffith's dated 1857,  land leased by a John Law Hackett, no occupied house.

  • Thank you for your response.  I meant to put my inquiry on the Co Roscommon, Kiltullagh parish page and I don't know how to do that now. Maybe I need to re-write it there?

    I have found birth records with Lowberry given as address in 1890 and 1894 (and others in the 1880s).  One of these families is in Clogher Upper in 1901 so that's why I'm wondering if Lowberry was merged into Clogher.
