Sarah Lydon was born in 1906 on Inis Treabhair. Her father was Coleman Lydon and her mother is listed in 1911 census as Bridget but she said her mom was known as Mauda Rua. She had a sister Barbara who immigrated to Pittsburgh, a sister Kate who lived in Connemara, a brother Michael who immigrated to Chicago, a sister Norah, a brother Coleman, a brother Anthony and several others. Her father had 2 wives. Bridget Joyce and Bridget Curran. I am not sure which one is my great-grandmother or where she came from. There are Joyces in England and Currans in Pittsburgh. All i really know about them is that they are cousins. I think Coleman, her father, had around 10-12 children.

Hi Kathleen,
I was born on Inis Treabhair (Innishtravin Island) which is now in the Catholic parish of Lettermore (Leitir M?ir) since approx 1950 before that is was in the parish of Rosmuck. and before that in Moyrus.
Your Great-grandfather Coleman was married twice first to Bridget Joyce and then to Bridget Curran your Great-grandmother. Coleman (1842 -1923) married Bridget Joyce (1843 -1889) on March 14, 1867, thay had the following children Patrick 1876; Coleman 1873-1923 lived at home; John 1878; Mary 1880; Bridget 1883; Norah 1889 in Pittsburg; Anne 1889 - 1962 married W. Patton April 23, 1913 in Pittsburg. Bridget Joyce died 1889 and Coleman married Bridget Curran or Br?d Rua as she was known as she probably had red or ginger hair, Bridget's mother was Mary or Maura and may have been called Maura Rua. Children of Coleman and Bridget Curran: Anthony 1891; Barbara 1895 married to Higgins in Pittsburg; Martin 1894; Michael 1901 in Chicago; Peter 1899; Kate 1903 - 1983 married Coleman Conneely from Criminagh, Lettermore; Thomas 1892 - 1954 lived in the home place and married Norah Conneely from Lettercallow; Sarah 1906 your Grandmother and Maureen 1912 - 1971 married Padraic (Patrick) Joyce Criminagh, Lettermore. There may have been more than the 16 children listed above. I think these are correct at that time you had to register a child within a certain time or else you would receive a fine.
Coleman's father was Anthony and his mother was Peggy (Margaret).
Bridget Curran was from the Inis Treabhair.
Bridget Joyce' parents were John Joyce and Anna Coyne, they had 3 children Bridget, Margaret went to Pittsburg I think and I don't know if the third child was a boy or a girl but I think this child may have gone to Pittsburg as well, Anna was from around Maam, when her husband John died she married Valentine Conneely from Inis Treabhair. Anna's brother Patrick was also living on the island, Valentine and Anna are my Great-grandparents. I hope this information is of assistance to you.
If you have any further information on the Lydons/Curran/ Joyce where they came from to Inis Treabhair and where they went to when thay left Inis Treabhair, I would appreciate it as I am trying to compile a list of everyone who lived on Inis Treabhair from the beginning. Do you know if Coleman had any other siblings etc. You can also email me at padraicoc@eircom.net . Any information or stories about Inis Treabhair would be appreciated. Other families from Inis Treabhair would have gone to Pittsburg around that time also.
Kind regards
P?draic ? Conghaile.

I am really excited to find this forum. My great grandmother was Bridget Lydon, the daughter of Coleman and Bridget Joyce. I am from the Pittsburgh area, and have connected with relatives of this family. Anthony Lydon, came through Pittsburgh and settled in Chicago, and I have recently connected with his grandson who lives in Chicago. I also have found a cousin in the Pittsburgh area related to the Conneely's I believe. I am really interested in finding more about my family in Ireland and plan to visit to see where my roots came from.

Hello, Greetings from the USA,
Are you related to the family of Martin and Julie Coyne/Koyne? They had a son, Michael John Lydon, 1929-2021. Left home about age 18-20 yrs. by his self and stayed. Became a US Naturalized Citizen. Was a successful man in the business. Was married and had one child, a son. Sweet and loving family. John was helping with it but became to sick. They have asked me to help them with it. Thank you for any help in advance for any info. I live in South Carolina, USA. My email is tpfox81@gmail.com.

Re: Coyne/Lydon
My Lydon research from letter above is still unsolved. There have been replies. This time I have included more info. First, my Lydon family member is Michael John Lydon, July 26, 1929-December 1, 2021. He is the son of Julia Coyne (1889?-1983/84) Martin Lydon. Born in Connemara, Galway, Ireland. He had a brother Tom that was in USA before him. He had cousins, Michael and Patrick Coyne. Probably siblings with the same names as that was very common. “Mike” served in the US Army 1951-1956, in Germany. He served honorably and awarded for his service. He became a USA Citizen after his military service. Worked and lived in New Jersey, New York. He met Alice Hopkins and married in May, 1968. He was twelve years older than her. They lived in South Carolina the rest of Mike’s life. His wife and only child are still living. In 1983, Mike and his son, went to Ireland to see his, Mike’s Mother, Julia Coyne. There is a Julia Coyne who died in 1984. Her Mother was Bridget ?. I do not know if she remarried after Martin died to a Coyne, or she was a Coyne who married a Lydon with the name of Patrick or Phillip. Any help would be wonderful. Another thought is that there may have been a passport used with another name on it. Possibly between brothers allowing Mike to leave Ireland. I have read this in some of the cross posts in another area. My own families are the Porter’s from Londonderry, Ireland and O’Shea’s (O’Shields) from Ireland. I have found both of these names in the Lydon/Coyne family trees. I took on the Lydon project as a labor of love. Any help from anyone over the pond would be great. Thank you for reading.

Hello! I also am researching my ancestors who are have the surnames Connelly/Conley and Lydon, and who migrated to Pittsburgh. I don't know their exact birthplaces in Ireland but my AncestryDNA results show South Connemara as a place where I have genetic connection to, which seems to line up with what others have mentioned on this thread.
My 2nd-great-grandmother was Margaret Connelly/Conley born in 1869 (born in West Virginia but moved by 1870 to Pittsburgh). Her parents were John Connelly/Conley and Mary Lydon (I believe). John Connelly was born in 1844 in Ireland and Mary Lydon was born in 1852 in Cincinnati, OH. Mary Lydon's parents were Bartley Lydon and Bridget Cribbon, as far as I am aware (both born in Ireland).
I made a spreadsheet where I was trying to track the Connelly's and Lydon's through various censuses; I am happy to share the link if anyone would like (unable to add a link here). I found census reports showing Margaret Connelly living with Lydon relatives later so I've been having trouble confirming the details with full confidence -- but happy to find others researching the same families!
