Searching for relatives in the Thomastown area. My great grandmother called Elizabeth Meagher moved to Dublin, married a Scotsman called Alexander Chapman who worked in inchicore works building the railway carriages. Lived in swiftrow on the Dublin Liffey. We also know she had a sister who was a nun in a convent close to Ringsend. My father was informed that two of my great grandmothers relations who lived in Townsend street were involved in the bolands mills in 1916 and one went to America shortly after. Looking to find any information, many thanks.

  • Do you have some dates for Alexander & Elizabeth ?
It could help your search if you know any additional details, such as when and where they married, or where children were were born etc...

I dont see any sign of your Alexander on the 1901 or 1911 census for Ireland and no Chapman households at Swith's Row Dublin city, or any sign of a marriage that I can see in the civil records, or any sign of births of any children to the couple in Ireland. The more recent birth records, i.e. after 1919, are not available online.

I see a likely death for your Alexander in 1947, reported age 56 (born c1891), place of death and residence St. Eithne's Road, Finglas in North Dublin, occupation coach builder. The informant is his widow Elizabeth.

EDITED : I see a very likely match for Alexander & Elizabeth's Meagher marriage in Scotland - 1925 in Blythswood, the ref. on ScotlandsPeople is 644/10 1250. Blythswood district is part of Glasgow. Could this fit the timeframe you have for your Alexander & Elizabeth ?

Scottish Marriage certs are very detailed and include names of mother and father of the bride and groom. You need to purchase a few credits to access the full details.

  • Thank you for your reply Shane. I do believe that is the correct Alexander and Elizabeth as they were married in scotland and he did die in 1947. We know their first child was John Chapman. The second was of a twin but one passed away, the other twin is my dads father. He was born on october 31st 1928 in either birmingham or manchester. Next there was a sister who's name was Mary or Elizabeth and lastly a son called Alexander who all lived at 79 St. Eithne Road.

How is it i go about accessing these records with credits?

Again thank you for any information you have.

  • The marriage of Alexander & Elizabeth is easy to find on the Scotland's people website, search Statutary Registers - Marriages under groom's forename & surname, bride's firstname and the year, and you should see a list of possible marriages, the summary results include the forename & surname of the the spouses so you can confirm which record you need. I haven't purchased credits in a while on Scotland's people, but it should be straightforward. Viewing the details of a Statutary Marriage required 6 credits, which if I'm reading their current pricelist correctly would work out about STG £ 1.50

The birth of their children are too recent to be available online - the seperete systems for GRO England/Wales, Scotland and GRO Ireland  (North & South) have restrictions on "recent" births so not easy to access those less than 100 years ago. You usually have to make other arrangements such as visiting a research room in person, or requesting searches etc. The more recent searches are often far more difficult as privacy rules kick in.
