Hello!

I am trying to find information about my Mahon ancestors from Co Longford, and of course any living cousins would be wonderful! In general they were from the Legga and Firmallagh and Granard areas. Although I believe some siblings migrated to nearby areas such as Co Cavan. (I think I found my GGM's DC record from Co Cavan, living with her daughter)

My grandfather Patrick Mahon was born in Legga, Co Longford in 1900, he immigrated to the US in 1928. He passed before I was born and I knew nothing of that side of my family. I have found the census records and some parish records for his parents and siblings, as well as for his fathers family. Just baptism entries. But everythining stops there, during that time frame.  Here is what I know.

My GF Patrick Mahon (1900) Born to Thomas Mahon and Margaret McGovern. Siblings were Edward, Thomas, Daniel, John, Mary Ellen. I have baptism entries for them.

My GGF was Thomas Mahon (1859) Born to Edward Mahon and Eleanor Duggan. Siblings were John, Patrick, Mariann, Eleanor, Edward, Daniel, and James. Again, only found baptism entries.

With so many repetitive names, it is hard to verify any other records of siblings, as parents names are not mentioned. So, I have not been able to confirm any records but baptism records.

A helpful person with a Roots subscription found the marriage record of Edward Mahon and Ellen Duggan in 1856. And this is the only record I have for Edward.  The marriage record has a Patrick Mahon as a witness, so I am guessing Patrick was Edwards brother. And as Edwards first born was named John, I am also surmising, Edwards father might have been John Mahon. And that he would have a brother John as well.

But I have not been able to find or confirm any other records for Edward or his family. It would be extremely helpful to to at least go back the one more generation, as I have come across other Mahon familes from the local area, but don't know if we are connected. There are many, many John Mahon's!!

And help in finding records for Edward Mahon and family would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks so much!

Debbie

  • Debbie:

As you likely know the Drumlish RC records start in 1834. Searching the subscription site Roots Ireland, I was not able to locate a baptismal record for Edward. However, following your view that the father of Edward was John, I searched for Mahon records in Drumlish RC records using John as the father. I located a February 20 1835 baptismal record for a Patrick Mahon with father John Mahon and mother Bridget Materson likely Masterson. NOTE parish register shows Masterson. This could be the same Patrick who was a witness at the 1856 marriage. So you have a possible lead on the family.

No need to post in Co. Longford. All messages end up on the main message board.
