RICHARD MAHON married BRIDGET KENNEY.

Children:

BRIDGET b. 1837-38, MARY b. Dec. 1845, SABINA b. Mar. 1846, JAMES b. Mar. 1855, MICHAEL b. 1858.  May have been others. The listed children emmigrated to the USA (1850-1885); Roman Catholic Baptism. Richard may have had a prior marriage to a woman named MARY but, not entirely certain of this. There is a man and woman by these names living and dying in the Mullagh Parish (Coolagh). their iformation is listed on rootsweb.  Not certain if they are my MAHON family yet. The Richard that is listed was 82 and the BRIDGET was 78 which are timeline consistent ages.  The key to determinating if they are the correct family will be BRIDGET's maiden name being KENNEY (or KENNY).  Other research shows this Richard had a son, PATRICK and that a MICHAEL was a witness at PATRICK's wedding indicating that they may have been brothers.

If someone could visit the Parish and glean information, I would be willing to pay a fee or trade for research here in the USA.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I have searched for this connection in Galway for 25 years.  BRIDGET MAHON (b. 1837-38) was my great grandmother.  She was married in Massachusetts in 1860 to MARTIN MURPHY.  MARTIN died in 1864 and she married my great grandfather, JOHN JACKSON in 1865 in Illinois.  Bridget associated with the following names here in the USA: MURPHY, LARKIN, MONAHAN, FERREL, QUIRK, DUGAN.  The MONAHANs and MURHYs may have been from Shangarry, Loughrea  and Tynagh areas.  It is unknown if Bridget (1837-38) knew them before her marriage to MURPHY here in the USA however.

Thank you and God bless you all,

  • Have you checked the Griffiths Valuation? There is a Richard Mahon in Coolagh and a Michael Mahon in Drumatober.

  • Hi Bernard

Therese here, liaison officer for Tynagh parish.  The parish priest in tynagh says that there no Mahons in Tynagh parish.  However if you contact the following email address lizmahon@eircom.net she has completed family trees for all the Mahons in Co. Galway. Margaret Gilmore Glennon of Salthill is informing Liz that you may contact her.

    Kind regards

    Therese

  • Yesterday, April 2, 2015 was a special day.  After two years of researching this website and after nearly 40 years of overall research for my Mahon family from Galway, Ireland, I received the most exhilerating email from a gentleman I spoke with briefly nearly three years prior.  At that time, we did not recognise a connection with the information we had at hand.  Yesterday, he informed me via email that new information had been discovered in the form of an address book once belonging to his grandmother's brother who had  had emmigrated to America during the early part of the 20th century (1926-1947).  It is fact that his relative is a direct descendant of Richard Mahon of Coolagh, the same one that is listed in the Griffith's Valuation of 1847.

To be brief, the addrsss book contains listings for three individuals residing in Raton, New Mexico in the 1920-1940 timeframe.  He noted in the addrss book that one of the three was (his) "my cousin".  In actulity, all three were his cousins since they were first cousins of one another. The same three individuals were my ancestors.  One was a great uncle who passed in 1936. The other two were my great aunts who passed in 1960 and earlier.

The discovery of the address book is incredible and indisputable evidence of my Mahon family connection to Gerry and Liz Mahon.  We are continuing to correspond with hopes of broadening our family tree knowledge.  I am extremely grateful for Gerry's help and willingness to "Reach Out" with what he has discovered. Without his assistance and recall of our conversation years ago, I would have been stopped in my quest to re-discover my Irish heritage.  Thank you Gerry.

  • Thank you Therese.

As you may already know, I received an email from Gerry Mahon yesterday informing me that he discovered an address book belonging to his relative who came to the USA in 1926. The address book contained the names of three of my ancestors. He noted that one was his cousin. Actually, all three were. I just wanted to thank you for your email remarks here and let you know that I have responded to Gerry through his wife's (Liz) email address.

I am so excited to hear from 'the correct' Mahon in Ireland that I am seriously considering plans for a visit soon. This website is incredible.

    God bless you all.
