Hello all,
My grandfather Patrick Mahon immigrated from Co Longford to New York in 1928. Unfortunately, he passed away at only 52 years old when my father was only 17. So, I never knew him or anything of my Irish side. Thankfully his naturalization papers gave me a place to start.
I was able to locate records of my grandfather's siblings, and parents, and the siblings of his parents. But only those two generations due to non-existent records going back in time, and privacy laws coming forth. I have submitted my DNA and have only discovered distant cousins, as apparently my family is not testing!! Those I know of, were all in the most northern part of Co Longford. Mostly the Farmullagh, Legga and Corglass areas. I do know that my grandfather's youngest sister moved just over the Cavan line after marrying. There were probably others that did as well.
It would be wonderful to find my living cousins. And hopefully to be able to learn more of my family. I have been told by various people that there are still many Mahon's in the Farmullagh area. I would imagine some of them would be my relatives!
I have seen a couple of posts here regarding volunteers helping people to get in touch with their relatives in Ireland. I was very much hoping someone might be able to help me do the same. I would greatly appreciate any help in doing so.
Thanks so much,
Debbie

Debbie:
There were only two Mahon families in the 1911 census in Farmullagh. I assume your grandfather Patrick is from one of these two families?

We have a volunteer who covers Killoe parish so I will contact him. We are limited in what we can do with living individuals due to privacy restrictions. Possibly if there is a connection, that individual can contact you directly.

Hi Roger,
Yes, the record with Maggie Mahon as head of household (widowed) is my grandfather Patrick's family. He is 12 yrs old.
I believe the other record with Patrick as head of household could be my grandfather's uncle. But that is not confirmed.
That would be wonderful! I do understand about the privacy restrictions. I'd appreciate any help you can provide and will hope for the best!
Thank you again.

Hi Roger,
I just wanted to follow up on my original post and see if perhaps the volunteer you spoke of might have made some headway regarding connecting with my Mahon's in Farmullagh. I am still very much hoping that can happen. :)
Thanks again for any help you can provide!

I'm just seeing your October 6th comment. Not sure why the Killoe volunteer did not respond. (I did verify that I had e-mailed the volunteer back in August). Sorry we could not be more helpful.

I should have clarified that I live in the States so I have limited ability to check out directories.

Hi Roger,
I have been meaning to post back to you to thank you for reaching out to them on my behalf, but my days kept getting away from me. Then this morning I had an email from David Leahy apologizing for his delay. Apparently he is the volunteer which was quite the surprise! David and I have been in touch via a common researcher, and he kindly helped find some family records for me last spring. He gave me the name of a gentleman in a nearby townland who may have married one of my Mahon's. I am just waiting to confirm whether the name and townland is enough information to write to him without an exact address. Hoping this turns into my connection!
Thanks again for your help!

Debbie:
Yes, David is our Killoe volunteer and I'm glad he was in touch. Normally, for writing you would show the townland, the post town usually the next largest town in the area and then the county followed by Ireland.

Oh, ok! I have never heard of the post town, thank you for that information. That's very helpful. Thank you again for all your help. Very much appreciated. Hopefully, I'll have some success.
Thanks again,
Debbie
