Is there a map of some sort that ties the house numbers in the Irish 1901 Census to anything meaningful like Griffith's?

I have a few relatives in Clonalvy, Meath, that I'm trying to connect the dots on, but the heads of household are different between 1855 and 1901 and those were the famine years (so there was a lot of "reorginaization" of households going on.

For instance, I think that house #6 in the Tankardstown Census was either 4a or 5a in Griffith's, but have no way of knowing if it is either or neither.

  • Scott,

The enumerators did draw up working maps when compiling the censuses but they were not retained after the task was complete.

What you can do is look at the Valuation Revision books in the Valuation Office in Dublin, sometimes called the cancelled books. These list each property, for roughly 10 years at a time, using the Griffiths numbers. It’s best to check right through from the start as sometimes the plots were renumbered if there had been significant new building. But it is usually possible to reconcile a property in the 1901 or 1911 census with the Griffiths map.

The Books are not on-line at the moment (save in Northern Ireland) so you either need to go to the Valuation Office in person when it reopens or arrange with them to conduct a search. There may be a search fee.

It's more fun to go myself :)

One more question. In Form B1, any idea which grouping would encompass all 9 of these residences (but no more)? I would think that a Barony would encompass more than 9 Farms.

I'll see how things look when this Corona-fest is a bit more travel-friendly.

    Thanks, Elwyn!

  • Scott,

The details on the B1 form comprise a townland. In this case the townland of Tankardstown. It had 9 houses of which 8 were inhabited. (Population in 1901 was 24). Townland is at the other end of the size scale from Barony. Tankardstown is 93 acres. The barony of Upper Duleek which it’s in, is about 28,000 acres.
