I am trying to verify the parents of Margaret Kavanagh.  She is listed on the headstone of her husband, Murtagh Somers, as being 66 years old at her death on November 25, 1877.  The cemetery is St. Brigid's Churchyard in Castlecomer, County Kilkenny.  I found a baptismal record of a Margaret Kavanagh from "Ireland, Catholic Parish Registers, 1655 - 1915 - Microfilm number 04196/01."  This shows a clear mother listed as Bridget but I am unable to figure out the father's name.  Any assistance would be great!

Thanks,

Laura Klein

  • Laura,

As they were both buried in the RC parish of Castlecomer, Kilkenny; one can guess that they were born and married in that same parish. The baptism records for Castlecomer have a ten year gap, but are available from 1812-1818 and then again from 1828-1880. What is the date you found for Margaret's baptism on the CPR? I could not locate one with a mother named Bridget. Regarding their marriage record, Roots Ireland has marriage records from 1812-1910 for Castlecomer, but I could not find one for them. Their death records and Griffith's Valuation indicate that they lived in the townland of Croghtenclogh; and that their son Patrick was present at both of their deaths.

  • Hi Carolyn,

Thanks for the fast reply. The information on the register says "Kildare and Leighlin > Borris > 1782 - 1813".  The date on the top of the page is October 7,1812.  I am only guessing this is the right Margaret.  It could be incorrect.

  • Laura,

I think this is a different Margaret Kavanagh who was from Co. Kildare....Kildare is northeast of Co. Kilkenny with Co. Laois in between them.

  • Laura,

I went back to Roots Ireland to try to find a church marriage record, and found this one for a Murtagh Summers in the same townland of "Crutinclough"....he is married to a Elizabeth Barry though. Date is 16 Feb 1844 in the RC parish of Muckalee - that is adjacent to Castlecomer. No parents' names are listed, but the sponsors are John Lynch & Andrew Phelan. This doesn't help solve any questions about Margaret Kavanagh, but I thought perhaps she is a first wife. Also, there are two other Somers in the Griffith's Valuation in Croghtenclough - Mary Somers and James Somers. What relation they are to Murtagh is unknown. Murtagh held two tenancies.

  • Laura,

Ignore what I said above about a first marriage because Roots shows that couple had four children, but no Patrick who was present at the deaths of Murtagh and Margaret. Just speculating....
