Margaret Keefe was born about 1821 Newcastle, Tipperary to William and Margaret Keefe. She had an older brother John, about 2 yrs older.  Margaret and John came to Australia as Bounty Immigrants aboard Woodbridge in 1842. The shipping documents mention parent names and Newcastle as place of baptism. If anyone knows anymore about Margaret or her family it would be appreciated as I am planning to visit Ireland in September and want to visit Tipperary. Joanne

  • Dear JHowlett:

Welcome to the Ireland Reaching Out programme.

I have had a look at the Ardfinnan parish register transcriptions on Roots Ireland and I do not see any baptism record for either Margaret Keeffe or her brother,John.  However, there is a family of William Keeffe and Mary Lonergan who have a number of children born between 1813 -1824.

If you have any further information such as the name of who sponsored her--it's not clear on the document, please add it to this message. If other family members also emigrated, please add that information too.

    Kind regards,

    Jane

Thanks Jane. It looks like Thomas Gore and Co bought her out but it is hard to read. I will attach a better copy of hers and John's immigration papers.. It says she was under the protection of Edmund Darwer? and her brother. Character references for John were from William Hackett and Patrick Walsh of Newcastle Tipperary. Margaret seems to be in Cork as her were all from that area. I only know of her and her brother immigrating. Not sure if there were other siblings. Her dad was dead when they immigrated so not sure what happened to the mum. Joanne
