Hi, I am looking for information on Maria Merrick born around 1830 in Lissadell, County Sligo and her husband George Adams Hicks (1830-1892). She married George Hicks at the Lissadell church on the 17th Oct 1854. Her father is listed as Richard Merrick, Sargeant at Mace Lissadell. George is listed as an agent for a  Muslin Company and his father is listed as William Hicks tradesman Sligo. The witnesses were Allen Merrick (her brother I think) and William Millar. They had 10 children all born in Sligo. I think Maria died in Chepstow, Monmouthshire in Wales near where two of her sons lived. George died in 1892 at Kennegar, Holywood, Down, Northern Ireland. Does anyone have any information on Merricks(Meyrick) and Hicks from Sligo? Thanks Sue

  • I assume this is one of George Adams Hicks sons:

Probate of the Will of George Adams Hicks late of 2 College Gardens, Belfast, Medical Doctor, who died 24 January 1920 granted at Belfast 1 April 1920 to Robert Moore Fraser, Medical Doctor and Mary Margaret Hicks, the widow. Effects: £10512 9s 3d.

The above will is not on-line but should be in PRONI in Belfast.

  • Hi Elwyn,

Thanks so much for your kind reply. This George Adams Hicks is indeed the son of George Adams Hicks Snr and he is my 2nd great uncle. I was aware of the will at Proni https://apps.proni.gov.uk/WillsCalendar_IE/willsSearchResultsDetails.aspx but as you say there is no copy online. Do you know if there is any way for me to get a copy of the will itself? I live in Ontario, Canada. Thanks Sue

  • Sue,

If you e-mail PRONI they will copy the will and send it to you (for a fee). They are shut at the moment, but obviously that service should resume when they re-open.
