Trying to find some family tree information about Maria / Mary Higgins and Margaret Higgins who emigrated to Sydney, New South Wales, Australia in July 1850 on the Sailing Ship Tipoo Saib.  Their immigration records indicated that they were from Athlone, County Roscommon and that Maria / Mary was about 16 years of age and was born in about 1834 while Margaret was aged about about 14 years of  age and born in about 1836. Both were recoded as being Roman Catholic.

I am seeking information about:

a) their birth / baptism dates; and

b) the parents of both Maria/ Mary and Margaret.

Thank You

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and limited the search to St. Peter's church in Athlone. I did not come up with a Margaret and Mary Higgins with the same parents. I found an 1828 Mary record and an 1832 Margaret record (see below) but the parents names were different. When I widened the search to all of Co. Roscommon there are too many Mary Higgins and Margaret Higgins records to sort thru. There is also a St. Mary's Athlone parish on the Westmeath side of the town. Unfortunately, that parish has a gap in baptismal records from March 1827 to May 1839.

  • hello Roger,

Thank you for your researching into Maria / Mary Higins and herssister Margaret Hoggins.

I have now found from the NSW Immigration Records that the paremts of both theese girls were Father: Timothy Higgins and Mother Margaret Dunn.

From your information that you sent me about the 2 girls the listed parents from the baptismal registers are different from the recorded NSW records.

Is it  possible to add in the parents names on the broader search that you also mentioned?

    Thank you very much.

  • Colin:

I widened the search to all of Ireland and did not find any Higgins baptismal records where the father was Timothy and the mother had a surname of Dunn. My guess is that Margaret and Mary were baptized in St. Mary's or some other nearby parish where records are not now available.

  • Hello Roger,

    thank you for your extrasearches.

Do you think it might  e pissible to check if there is a Marriage Record for Timothy Higgins and Margaret Dunn in Athlone?

Also would it be worth checking to see if there are any other siblings to Maria / Mary Higg.ins and her sister Margaret Higgins in Athlone,.Once again, thank you for your help.

  • Colin:

No Timothy Higgins marriage to a Dunn. I already searched for baptismal records for siblings of Margaret and Mary (with parents Timothy Higgins and Margaret Dunn) and there was no records.
