Hello all! My name is Katherine and I live in the US. All my life I've known that I'm Irish, and now that I'm an adult, I want to learn more about my heritage and become more connected to the culture. My Irish relative is is my great grandmother, Marie E. Horn, maiden name Turtle. I'm not sure if both Horn and Turtle are Irish, but I also just don't know much overall. Sadly, my great grandma passed away two years ago so I can't go to her to ask. Does anyone know anything about a Turtle or Horn family line or heritage? Thank you!

Katherine:
The 1911 census shows 273 individuals in Ireland with the surname Turtle. The greater majority of the people lived in Co. Antrim with a few in Co. Down, Co. Louth and Co. Wicklow. I don't see a civil marriage record for a Mary Turtle to someone with the surname Horn.
Do you know the approximate year of birth for Maria Turtle? Any parental data? Siblings?

According to MacLysaght’s “The Surnames of Ireland” Turtle is an English name, commonly found in what is now Northern Ireland, brought to Ireland by English settlers, probably in the 1600s. MacLysaght mentions that the name Turtle was noted in Pender’s census of Ireland in 1659.

Hello Katherine,
I'm not related, but did your great grandmother Marie Turtle marry Alvin Horn in Philadelphia in 1941? If so I can send you information about how you may be able to further your research.
Thank you,

Marie Turtle Horn was married to Alvin Horn and they had I think five children in the Manayunk/Roxborough neighborhood of Philadelphia. Alvin's mother Maggie Brennan Horn and my grandmother Kitty Crennan Daley were sisters. I met Marie several times at family gatherings. She was quick to smile, proud of her big family and interested in all her and Al's cousins, including my mother Kay Daley Weirauch and Aunt Betty Daley Welde.
Marie's father was a funeral director in Roxborough. My mother often said that Al and Marie were childhood sweethearts.
