I am trying to confirm when my great great grandfather, Cornelius Marrinan (born about 1836) passed away, probably in the early 1920s. There were a number of people with the same name. One story passed down in a family that lived near him at Illaunbaun is that he died on Mt Callan Sunday (which I understand was observed on the last Sunday of July) in the early 1920s. He was definitely still alive in 1912 when his youngest son visited with his family from USA.

We have not been able to find a civil death registration or any burial record in the Ennistymon Parish or Inagh Parish. However the family do have a vault in the Kilfarboy Cemetery, which may have been erected by Cornelius’ father in 1842 to commemorate an older son who died that year. I have recently discovered that the Cemetery is near Moy church which is in Kilfarboy Parish and I wondered if his funeral service may have been conducted there.

Were records kept on funeral services performed in the Parish between 1911 and 1925? If so, do you know where these records are held and how I might obtain information. Would there be records of who were interred in the family vault at Kilfarboy Cemetery, if so where would they be held?

Thank you for your help.   Michael

  • Hi Miriam, Thank you for your response. We know a great deal about Cornelius’ life but one of the major records that has alluded us thus far is the date of his death. He was alive at the 1911 census living with his widowed daughter in law and two children. He was live 1912 when his youngest son, also called Cornelius, visted from America with his wife and children as he is mentioned in the Immigration records.

I descend from his second eldest daughter, Mary, who was born in 1864. Mary came to Australia along with two brothers and a sister in late 1880s. The children to stay in Ireland were a daughter, Anne, who married Michael Greene in 1900, Nora who married Andrew Garrahy in 1905, James who never married and John who married Anne Garrahy in 1904. John took over the working of the family farm at Illaunbaun but died in 1909 and that whose widow Cornelius is living with in 1911. I am in contact with a descendant of John & Anne.

Cornelius had married Honora O’Gorman about 1860, another of the elusive records. Honora is said to be from Lahinch and she died in 1891.

Any suggestions with where to find burial records would be appreciated.

    Kind regards,

    Michael
