Born abt 1799 in Ireland.  Died Sept 12, 1878 in York Co., Ontario Canada.  His wife Mary King  died Oct 11, 1856 aged 51 yrs. in York Co. Ontario Canada.  Gravestone in Ontario cemetery reads Natives of Newport, Tipperary Ireland.  Earliest Canada Census records for Martin are 1851 7 61.   1871 census shows age of 70, widowed, Roman Catholic, Shoemaker living with son James Flynn. Sons marriage register Oct 24, 1866 to Josephine Sanders in York Co. Ontario shows James parents Martin & Mary (King) Flynn.  James was born in York Co. Ontario. in 1841.  I have not found any records when Martin & Mary arrived in Canada or any Ireland records except the possiblily of a Griffith's evaluation for Martin Flynn, Co. Mayo, Barony Burrishoole, Landlord Orsan Hoban.  Info on gravestone is the only indication of where they were from in Ireland.

The records for the RC parish of Newport Co. Tipperary start in 1795   https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0246   However, when I search the subscription site Roots Ireland, I did not locate a baptismal record for Martin or Mary around 1800. I also did not locate a marriage record for them.

I guess it is possible they were baptized in a nearby parish which no longer has records back to 1800 and then moved to the Newport area before leaving Ireland.

The Griffiths Valuation record you located would not have any connection to your Martin Flynn who left Ireland before 1841. The Griffiths survey was conducted in Co. Tipperary around 1850.

You may want to consider DNA testing.

  • Thank you very much for your reply.  I didn't think the Griffiths Evaluation would apply.  Perhaps our Flynn Family Tree will remain from what we know about the family once they arrived in Canada.  I'm not sure if I can find anything about the Gravestone here pertaining to Martin & Mary.  Their son James was my great-grandfather.  He and his wife Josephine had 11 children. On findagrave.com it is located in St. Luke's Cemetery, Thornhill Ontario

    Thanks again

  •  Martin Flynn's  1871 census  for York, Ontario Canada indicated his place of birth as FRICHAM, possibly written down as it may have sounded,  or transcribed incorrectly etc and place of birth is  Baile Ui Fhiachain which I've found the Irish name also for Newport.

1861 census, widowed, daughter Ann age 20 born Ireland.

1852 census Flinn, Martin, Mary wife, Pat age 18, b Ireland, Ann age16, b Ireland, M.A. age 5, b Canada, Jas. 11, b. Canada, Sarah age 3, b Canada. ( 1852 census may have asked age at next birthday as it was taken Jan. 1852.)

An Ireland trip is being considered and would like to visit area where my Flynn's were from. All I have to go on is the grave marker in Ontario stating they we're natives of Newport Tipperary Ireland and the census record mentioned above. ( Plus my grandfather also mentioning his grandparents place.of birth)
