Hi there - I am researching the Mulvey family of Kilcooly, Townland of Moneyboy, nr Strokestown. I am trying to find the birth record for Martin Mulvey (my G Grandfather). I know his father was Patrick Mulvey but dont know his mothers name. Martin was born approx 1838 (based on his marriage cert saying he was 37 when he married in 1875). He had a brother Michael (slightly older) abd a sister Mary (no details found yet). Patrick Mulvey (my GG Grandfather) died in 1871 aged 80 years as a widower and I am trying to find more information about him and his wife. He left the land he owned to be shared between his 2 sons. A family member in the US states that Patrick was born in Coone and bought the land, Moneyboy, when he married. Any help gratefully received.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find a baptismal record for Martin. According to my reference book, if you lived in Kilcooley civil parish, the RC parish would be Killucan also know as Croghan. Here is the parish register which starts in 1811 https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0554 and according to the index there are no gaps. You may want to scan the registers to look for Martin.

Roots Ireland did have many Mulvey/Mulvy/Mulvee baptismal records in Killucan/Croghan RC parish.

Looking for Michael with father Patrick, I located an 1831 baptismal record where the mother was Anne Flanagan but I did not find any other records with Anne Flanagan as the mother. Focusing on Mary Mulvey with father Patrick, I located an 1836 record with mother Eleanor McLaughlin. Again no other siblings with Eleanor McLaughlin as the mother.

Let me know if you have questions.

  • Thanks Roger. I'm at a loss now - I felt sure that Martins birth details would show up. I'm now wondering if, as Patrick may have been from Cloone originally, that he may have married and had his children there before moving to Moneyboy, Roscommon. Is there a resource that would show the date of his purchase of said land at Moneyboy (my dad told me that rumour had it that he won it in a card game). The 1901 census for Marin shows his age as 64 so it seems my approx year of birth (gleaned from his marriage cert) is correct. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks, Kath

  • Hi Kath

In 1858 (Griffith's) Patrick Mulveigh is a tenant farmer in Moneyboy, residing at farm #1a where he has a holding of 52 acres. Patrick "Mulvey" also has a holding of bog here. The landlord was Arthur French Esq. (recently deceased) and Mulvey did not own his farm. Look to to the Frenchpark estate records for possible information on tenant agreements or encumbered estate sales.

He is likely to have been a gentleman farmer and cesspayer in the district of Tulsk -Elphin - Strokestown. He was not a small farmer and his ancestors would have likely applied to the Freeholders Register in 1829. He probably came in to Moneyboy through marriage.

As for baptism records, as Roger mentioned, Moneyboy is on the border of the civil parish of Killukin (Roscommon).... so often confused with the RC parish of Croghan (Killukin & Killummod) however, which is an entirely different parish of the same name in North Roscommon... "Killukin (Boyle)".

Therefore it is the RC Parish of Tulsk that should be explored for baptisms etc. for the civil parishes of Kilcooley and Killukin. Elphin may be also worth considering.

  • Hi Rua and thanks for your information. Although I had looked at Griffiths it didn't occur to me that Patrick didn't own the acreage. I have a copy of the Will left by Patricks grandson called Martin too. He died in 1956 and left the land Moneyboy to a niece in the US. So I  assume that someone in the family was eventually able to purchase the land ???? I think my next move is to trawl the parish records you have pointed me in the direction of and also to look to the records for Cloone for Patricks birth record. Thanks again, Kath

  • Hi Kath

Yes. The family would have had the opportunity to buy out the landlord in the early 20th century (c. 1914) as a "Land Act Purchase" which put them into a whole other kind of debt (to the government), that took two generations (usually) to clear. Land rich but cash poor.
