Hello. Im looking for Martin's parent's names. He was married to Mary Henry, and later a Honoria (unknown surname) I've been unable to find any info online and DNA tests with ancestry and 23andme haven't yielded any help either. Any info is greatly appreciated.

  • Possible match for the first marriage of Martin in Kilfree RC Chapel, Co. Sligo - Martin Gara & Mary Henery 14th February 1879
Kilfree chapel was located about half way between Boyle and Charlestown. The marriage was the first for both Martin and Mary, both are shown as "full age", so 21 or over, the groom is a farmer his residence looks like Carns[?] and the bride's residence Knocknashammer  townland. The bride and groom both 'signed' with their mark. The father's names are Pat Gara and Roger Henery - both farmers.

I also located the second marriage - in the same parish and also on Valentine's day this time in 1893 - Marriage of Martin O'Gara & Honora O'Gara 14th February 1893.  On this marriage Martin is shown as a widower same occupation and residence as the first marriage, his father is shown as deceased. Honora's residence is Ragwood  townland her father Farrell O'Gara also a farmer and deceased. The bride, groom and witnesses 'signed' with their mark.

  • Since Martin seems to have been born before the start of civil records a search for a possible baptism would be required - if he was born in the same area as he lived when married that would probably be Kilfree church and parish, unfortunately baptism records for the parish are only available back to the 1870s, and associated parish of Killaraght also only only has record back to the same period, so not far back enough to include a record for your Martin. Both parishes date back much further, 1830s at least than the available records. Depending on Honora's age when married there could be a civil birth record for her...

Griffith's Primary Valuation several Patrick/Pat Garas in the area, the first at Knocknashammer townland in Kilfree civil parish leasing a house, land offices and land or just over 16 acres from a Rich. O'Farrell Cadell, and the second at Cuilmore leasing a house and land of about 12 acres from Lord De Freyne.

Have you found him and his wife and possible children on the census returns, did Martin and Honora stay in Ireland ?

One possible way to search for the first name of Martin's mother might be to try searches of his father death, to establish if she died before or after Pat., and then to check for possible death for her - your Martin or someone else known in the family might be the informant, or the townland might fit known details..
