I am currently trying to find some information about my father's family.  Through information I found on Ancestry, I have been able to trace his family back to my 3X great grandparents.  They are Martin Ryan and Honora Dunn.  They were married on February 7, 1810 in Cappawhite; the Diocese was Cashel and Emly.  The witnesses were John Dunn and William Hunt.  According to the info from Ancestry, Martin was a farmer.

I also have some information on my 2x great grandparents and my gg grandfather's siblings.  My gg grandfather was Rody Ryan.  He was born in January 1817.  He married Bridget Comeford (Comerford/Comfort) on August 24, 1845 by W.F. Mullally in Carhew.  The witnesses were Denis Ryan and Judy Ryan.  The marriage place was Anacarty and Donohill; the parish variants were Anacarty, Anacarty, Donohill; the diocese was Cashel and Emly.

Rody and Bridget emigrated to New Castle, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, USA in May 1858.  They had four children with them when they emigrated -

Catherine Ryan who was baptized on September 15, 1846.  The sponsors were Michael Ryan and Margaret Comeford.  The parish variants were Anacarty, Anacarty, Donohill; the diocese was Cashel and Emly.

Honora Ryan who was baptized on February 5, 1849.  The sponsors were Timothy Ryan and Catherine Ryan.  The parish variants were Anacarty, Anacarty, Donohill; the diocese was Cashel and Emly.

Martin Ryan who was baptized on February 20, 1853.  The sponsors were John Ryan and Margaret Ryan.  The parish variants were Anacarty, Anacarty, Donohill; the diocese was Cashel and Emly.

Margaret Ryan who was baptized on April 16, 1856.  The sponsors were Michael Comerford and Sarah English.  The parish variants were Anacarty, Anacarty, Donohill; the diocese was Cashel and Emly.

Rody's siblings - John Ryan who was born about 1815, Catherine Ryan who was born about 1824, and Michael Ryan who was born about 1830, all settled in and around New Castle, Pennsylvania.

I am not familiar enough with the parish system in Ireland to know which parish and area my ancestors lived.

Any information about any other siblings of Rody Ryan or Bridget Comeford, or children he and Bridget may have had that died before they emigrated, would be appreciated.  Also, it would be wonderful if there are any Ryan relatives still in the area.  I was planning a trip to Ireland this fall (2020) but due to the coronavirus, it looks like it will be postponed until the fall of 2021.  That gives me more time to research my family.

Thank you for any information that can be provided.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on the subscription site FindMyPast.ie and located four baptismal records. The earliest record in 1819 was in Cappawhite and the other three records were in Anacarty. Note the records for Roger and Catherine show Mary Dunn while the other two records show Norrie Dunn.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Roger,

Thank you so much for the warm welcome and the information.  I am still trying to understand the parish system in Ireland.  It is quite a bit different than the Catholic parishes and diocese's where I grew up in Pennsylvania, USA.

My cousins and I are having a Zoom call next week, and they will be as thrilled as I am about receiving this information.  With the surname of Ryan, I wasn't quite certain how or where to start, so I truly appreciate the information you have found.

Do you know if there is some way to find out if any Ryan's, that are descedants of Martin Ryan and Nora Dunn, may still be in that area?  I would like to connect with them and share the information I have about Rody and Bridget Comeford Ryan, and Rody's siblings that were in the New Castle, Pennsylvania area.  I have pictures of some of their headstones, US census info with children listed, addresses, obituaries, etc.  I have even connected with a descedant of Michael Ryan who still lives in the New Castle area.

Thank you again for the information.  It is truly appreciated.

  • Mary Ann:

I grew up in Philadelphia but have lived in Maryland for many years. The Irish RC and civil parish boundaries are complicated and you have to work with the records for many years to understand how they work. Do you think Rody and Roger are the same person?

I can'r answer your question about descendants of Martin Ryan and Honora Dunn are atill in the area. First, Ryan is the most common surname in Co. Tipperary. Second, any descendants left in Ireland would be fourth or fifith cousins and they probably would not be aware of the names of their gr-gr-gr grandparents.

You can also add Rody and Bridget to our XO Chronicles site.

  • Roger,

Thank you for this additional information.  I do think that Rody and Roger are the same person.  All of the baptismal records I have found so far for his children that were baptized in Ireland are from the Diocese of Cashel and Emly, and the parish variants are Anacarty, Anacarty and Donohill.

How do I determine which parish I should list for the "group" on this site?  As I stated earlier this is much different from what I am familiar with here in the states.

After the Zoom call with my cousins, I will be adding the information about Rody and Bridget Ryan.  As I review his children and his siblings with my cousins, I will add their stories also.  Perhaps their  stories may help me find some Ryan cousins still living in Ireland.  If nothing else, their life stories will keep them from being forgotten.

Can I get back to you by Sunday since I'm away and don't have access to my reference books?

  • Mary Ann:

Our parish pages are based on civil parishes. I would use Donohil.
