Hello, My name is Mary O’Dowd I live not very far from Carramanagh Dunmore,I saw you are looking for a Martyn family I know a Martyn family that live there , I spoke to them and told them about your request, they asked me to get in contact with you, the amount of information you have given seems to add up, would you have had a John Martyn that lived in Astoria Queens New York in the late 1968 -1972 ,if so your on the right family, looking forward to hearing from you Mary O’Dowd,a neighbour of the Martyn family thanks 

Hi, I also have ancestors from the Martin/ Martyn family in Carramanagh in Dunmore. My great grandmother was Bridget Martin the 4mo old child on the 1901 census daughter of Patrick and Mary Martin (Mary's maiden name was also Martin/ Martyn). She came to over to the US and lived in Brooklyn, NY then New Jersey until she was 93! Patrick and Mary Martin are buried at the Dunmore Cemetery http://gccapps.galwaycoco.ie/Graveyards/Grave/Default.aspx?id=9&gid=2614 . I am trying to find out more information on my family and if I am related to any of the Martins that live there currently. Also, there is supposedly a "Kissing Tree" nearby and I was wondering if any locals knew about such a thing?

Good morning Mary and Cory,

All four branches of my family tree (paternal and maternal grandparents) hail from Ireland. The information I have about my father's paternal line is most sketchy. My dad died when I was 20 and his father died before he was born and his mother died when I was 17. Like many Irish, my dad and grandmother didn't speak much about their families of origin and I was too  young when they died to have asked them the questions I wish now that I had asked. My mother also died when I was in my 20's and although I received some information from her, it was very very limited.

What I do know is that my paternal grandparents were Patrick Martyn and Della Martyn (nee Joyce). They were both born in the first decade of the 20th century and after they married (sometime in the 1920's) they lived in Brooklyn, NY and had two sons - my father, Raymond Patrick, and his brother Arthur who went by "Bud". Bud never married and therefore I have no first cousins on my father's side. My parents had 4 children, me, Michael, James and Maureen. We lived from 1962-1973 in Oceanside, New York.

I know from information in my baby book, that my paternal grandfather, Patrick, was the son of Patrick Martyn and Mary Martyn, nee Murphy (if the baby book is accurate). I know that my father always said that his father's family was from the Galway area. In searching census records I came upon a 1911 census which caught my eye because it was the only census record I could find from the relevant time period that showed a Patrick and Mary Martyn with several children, one of whom was a Patrick whose age at the time seemed about right. This was the  Martyn family at Carramanagh, Dunmore that I inquired about.

I have a few other tidbits that may mean something to you, Cory, and to the Martyn family still in Carramanagh.  I do know that my father had Martyn relations in the New York and New Jersey area but for whatever reason I don't recall ever meeting them except that when my paternal grandmother died in 1979, her funeral was held in Islip, New York because part of our Martyn family lived there. At her funeral we met an aunt of my father's by the name of Emily Martyn (I'm pretty sure her name was Emily, but may have been Edna). She would have been an aunt who married a Martyn. The other family name that I can recall is that my father had a cousin on his paternal side named Loretta who lived in New Jersey. I don't remember her married name.

Sorry to pepper you with so many little pieces of information but it's really all I have to go on and I wanted to provide enough information that might trigger an "aha" type moment from the Martyns in Carramanagh.

Hi again Patrick, sorry just saw your response!

I would say that if your baby book was accurate, we may be talking about different Martin families. I say this because Mary Martin's maiden name was also Martin! (spelling of Martyn vs Martin varied based on who was writing the records). This was a well-known quirk in our family history, though there is no known relation between Mary and her husband Patrick. Mary's maiden name as a family story I also found confirmed on Bridget's birth certificate which showed both her married and maiden name to be Martin.

The best way to be sure is to do a DNA test and see if we match on ancestry.com, which may reveal many more relatives we don't know about!

Double post but I think I may have found your family via the US Census!

This Martyn family is Irish but lived in Islip, NY and have a mother Mary father Patrick and son Patrick (son born around 1905 but was actually born in NY per the census as the parents immigrated in 1896/7). The father was a blacksmith. Patrick has a brother John and a sister Emily (which may be the Emily you met!)
