I'm searching for information on Mary Maher who left Ireland in 1848. She ended up settling in Nova Scotia Canada but I don't know if this was her first entry into North America. Born in Tipperary (don't know the parish) to John/ Mary Maher. I do not know her mother's maiden name. Mary Ann was born on Feb. 4, 1832. She never returned to Ireland. Lived in Canada until her death On September 11, 1920. Thank you.

I will be visiting Ireland in September 2024.

  • Tamara,

Are you sure of Mary Ann's birthdate? There is a record on RootsIreland (paid subscripption) for a Mary Maher, baptized Feb 3, 1833, in Thurles, Tipperary, parents John Maher and Mary Egan.

  • I'm sure it could be different. One never knows how accurate things are. That's my problem with these old records. It could be her for sure. I have even seen it as 1828, on her death certificate which was filled out by her son. On the death cert it does not give the month of birth. It's so confusing. I would be thrilled to find out. I'm going to be in Tipperary.

    Thank you

  • Tamara,

I see you are on Ancestry. There are 51 trees, some with different surnames for her mother. Have you found a marriage record which might have her mother's name. Where did you find the Feb. 4, 1832, birthdate? On RootsIreland between 1825 and 1833, there are 11 Marys born to a John Maher and Mary in Tipperary. Have you done a DNA test to narrow down where Mary is from?

  • Yes. I am on ancestry. Looking at all of those trees is so confusing because who has real documentation for her? I have not seen anything to prove to me her parents other than Mary and John on her death cert. I have not done a DNA. I think after looking at the different Census records and calculating what her ages were at those times, brought me to think her birth year was 1828, not 1832 as others have written.   She married John Furlong(born in Nova Scotia) on November 5,1849 in Halifax. Her grave stone in Canada has no marker on it, so we've looked for that when we were there. I think I have found a marriage cert for her on Family search, but not positive. This is the link to what I think the marriage cert might be.

I just relooked at the death registration form filled out by Mary's son. Underneath where he writes her birthplace as Tipperary, Ireland, he wrote 1928.

I also looked back at the 1901 Canadian Census on Family Search she was 69 years old and it says Mary's birthday is Feb. 4, 1832.

This is why I am so confused about her birthday.

    Thank you for helping.

  • Tamara,

Without the surname of Mary's mother, it is difficult to identify the correct baptismal record. The Canadian censuses from 1871 to 1901 suggest 1832 or 1833.

If Mary's mother, I mentioned above, was Mary Egan, Mary had a brother John born in 1829. Maybe researching him will lead to something.

    Regards- Mary
