I am searching for information about my great-great grandmother Mary Ann Navin or Nevin or Norvine. She was born in the Sligo area in 1829. Mary Ann married a James (?) Cosgrove. She (or they) emigrated to North America around 1851. Their daughter Bridget Cosgrove was born in St. Mary’s, Ontario, Canada in 1853. They settled in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA around 1860. James died in the US Civil War in 1863. She re-married Edward Cavanaugh in 1866 but he died in the cholera epidemic in 1867. The 1910 US Census showed Mary Ann had 6 children but only 1 (Bridget Cosgrove Duffy) was still living. Mary Ann died in 1918 in Cincinnati.

Any insights will be appreciated. Thank you!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland in Co. Sligo and the earliest Mary Navin/Nevin record was in 1832 (see below). Can you locate the 1918 death record to see if it shows parents names?

You have great pictures of Mary Anne. You may want to add her emigration story and the 1860 picture to our XO Chronicles site.  https://irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-database

  • Thank you for the suggestion. I can't believe I missed that bit of information before. I've done some digging and the cemetery record shows her parents name as Patrick and Dorothy.

I've seen Mary Ann's name always listed as Mary Ann but on her daughter's cemetery record that I searched this morning it is listed as Margaret. I don't know if that is accurate or not.

Thank you so much for any suggestions.

No Mary Navin/Nevin baptismal records with father Pat around 1831. There was an 1831 Margaret Nefin record. See below. Many Sligo RC parishes did not have records until 1840 or later.

  • Thank you for the information. This is such a huge help. Not sure where the Eleanor/Dorothy name can be resolved, but one more clue is always a step in the right direction.
