    Hello again!

www.irishgenealogy.ie has the church records for the Diocese of Cork and Ross including St. Finbarr's. I saw the 1775 baptismal record for Mary Crowley but did not see a marriage record for Mary and John Murphy and did not see a baptismal record for Andrew Murphy. Did Mary and John marry in Quebec?

  • Greetings Mr. McDonnell,

thanks for your responses to my posts about my ancestors. I am not a very good researcher, and only have notes on bits of papers and have not always kept record of the sources... I did some research in the province of Québec in the early 2000, and some in Dublin in 2013.

In one of my notes, I have Mary Crowley's sepulture on 19 July 1813 at Pointe Lévi, at the age of 38, in the Cimetière des picotés. The year of the date with her age matches the baptismal record of Mary Crowley in St. Finbarr's Parish. I omitted to note the source of this information, it would likely be a microfilm in Québec. I think this info is pretty reliable that I have the "right" Mary Crowley!

I know that Andrew Murphy is son of Mary Crowley and John Murphy from his marriage recorded at L'Ancienne-Lorette Parish on April 26, 1825: Microfilm Drouin, paroisse Notre-Dame-de-L'Assomption, L'ancienne-Lorette, 1825, 14e feuillet.

I started my quest because I wanted to find out about Andrew Murphy and Bridget Culleton's daughter, Mary Murphy, my great grandmother. There was an oral story told in the family that she was an orphan when she arrived in Québec at the time of the great famine in Ireland, and was adopted by the Fiset family; she eventually married with Joseph Fiset. However, for a long time I was unable to find her baptismal certificate; she was not born in L'Ancienne-Lorette, where her parents lived. With the help from someone in the US, I was finally able to track her down: she was born in St-Jean-Chrisostome Parish, across the St-Laurence river from Québec, on 14 January 1835. I went to the parish and checked the record with my own eyes. So Mary Murphy did not come on a boat and arrive as an orphan, as the story went! So I wanted to find out where her parents came from, where they the one who immigrated from Ireland?

The information I found on Bridget Culleton (or Culliton)'s parents, Patrick Culliton and Joanna Murphy, came from ancestry.co.uk back in 2013. I haven't checked any new information since then on that website. So that information is very partial and unverified...

Back to your question about where Mary Crowley and John Murphy got married, I can't put my finger on the information but I thought they got married before they immigrated to Québec. I also thought that Andrew was born before they immigrated. I wish I had kept better notes! I could have received this information from online boards and emails such as yours, in my earlier days of research.

I wish I could also find where Patrick Culliton and Joanna Murphy were born, and got married...

Thanks for your interest in my research, and any help you can give! I appreciate.
