Hello

I am trying to work out the parish that Mary Curran was born in. According to the shipping records she came from Wexford Ireland to Tasmania in 1854. She was born around  1831 in Wexford Ireland and married Patrick Heffernan from Tipperary Ireland in Hobart Tasmania in 1857. and died in Deloraine Tasmania in 1910.

I live in Kingston Tasmania.

thankyou IRene Norris

  • Hi Irene,

www.rootsireland.ie/ has two baptism records for Mary Curran (+ surname variants) 1931 + - 5 years:

    Name:Mary CurrinDate of Birth:23-Aug-1829
    Date of Baptism:24-Aug-1829Address:TempletownParish/District:TempletownGender:FemaleCountyCo. Wexford
    Denomination:Roman Catholic
    Father:John CurrinMother:Mary ConelyOccupation:Not Recorded
Informant 1:John Nevil Informant 2:Joan Whalen

    Name:Mary CorrinDate of Birth:
    Date of Baptism:16-Oct-1836Address:
    Parish/District:EnniscorthyGender:FemaleCountyCo. Wexford
    Denomination:Roman Catholic
    Father:Pat CorrinMother:Judy KeysOccupation:
Informant 1:Mick Esmond Informant 2:Catherine Day

IF Mary followed the Irish naming pattern when she named her own children, the second son would be John or Pat & the first daughter would have been Mary or Judy

However, I looked on ancestry.com & the children were Patrick Mary Michael Joanna Margaret Annie & Catherine according several trees

She has Mary's parents as John Curran & Maria Courville but I couldn't find that marriage

I couldn't find the marriage of John & Mary either but did find Pat & Judy:

    Date of Marriage:13-Feb-1831
    Parish / District:Enniscorthy
    County:Co. Wexford
    Husband Patt Curran Roman Catholic
    WifeName:JudyKeys Roman Catholic

Looks like Pat & Mary may have come to Australia according to ancestry.com so probably not yours - sorry!

There are 32 trees on ancestry which have Mary & Patrick but none has the parish! There is also confusion about her mother's name: Maria Courville / Merle Courlander!

There are no Wexford records in the 1821 or 31 Irish Censuses.

The Tithe Applotments (free at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/) have 11 Currans in Wexford 1825-28 from 6 different parishes: Fethard Killegney Kilpatrick Kilpipe Oldross & Templeladigan. So, IF Mary's father was John & IF one of these is him, you have a choice of Fethard and Kilpipe as the parish Mary came from. There are also 15 Currins but no Johns among them & 10 Currens with 1 John from Killesk.

Sorry I couldn't pinpoint the parish for you Irene

    Col
