John Joseph Cruice was eldest son and heir of Peter Cruice of Springlawn and Helen Burke. He married Matilda Lynch third daughter of James Lynch of Raglass or Rathglass Co Galway , The marriage settlement was 22 March 1810. Trustees in the marriage settlement were John Burke of Grovesview or Grouseview and Owen Lynch of Woodpark Co Roscommon. John died 3rd November 1850 Montreal Canada and was buried in the Basilique Notre-Dame.

Hi Pat
Thanks. I have your grandfather on my tree of the Cruices. I'm compiling the tree in the hope that I can find the parents of my ancestors William and Maria Cruice who lived at Cruice Lawn near Castleblakeney Co Galway in Ireland. They seem to have been cousins.
Gerdie Cruice, the last Cruice living at Cruice Lawn said in an interview that the lease to Cruice Lawn (then named Gallagh) was bought for William by the Cruice family of Springlawn, the family from which you descend.. I've managed to find quite a number of the wider family who lived at Summerhill in Galway, and elsewhere, but the only son of the Springlawn family that I've found was John Joseph Cruice, although he possibly had an unmarried sister named Frances.
Lately I've been doing research in the Registry of Deeds via Family Search online. The images are there and that is how I found some of the info. Marriage contracts were sometimes registered when they land was part of the deal.
John Joseph Cruice's father - Peter Cruice of Summerhill and Springlawn was married twice, the first time to Helen Burke who I think was a member of the Glinsk family. She seems to have died before June 1800. When Peter died on 1 August 1806 at age 49 his wife was Eliza Donelan. He is buried in St Mary's Cemetery Mount Bellew.
Peter was the oldest son of John Cruice of Summerhill and Catherine Kelly of Kellysgrove Co Galway. Some of the Cruices were in the Irish Brigades in the French Army in the 1700s. Several left France during The Revolution. The Brigades reformed as part of the British Army in 1794. Several Cruices from the Summerhill family then joined Walsh's Brigade and fought for the British.

Hi Pat
This is the reference to the pages in the Register Book 627 pages 505-506, Memorial No. 434184, film 008081206.
One way to find it - Go to Family Search: Search: Catalog: Keywords [enter Ireland Deeds] :Transcripts of memorials of deeds, conveyances and wills 1708-1929: scroll down to Deeds etc v. 627-628 and click on the camera icon, then find the pages. The handwriting is not the best. You need to sign in.
One thing that is puzzling, John and Matilda married in 1810 but the first birth that I have found was cir 1819. I have four sons and three daughters on my tree. Two unnamed daughters might have come first.

Hi Pat
For John and Matilda's children I have two unnamed girls who possibly were born first. Then boys Richard William Cruice b. cir 1820, bapt.27 March 1822 St Andrew Dublin, died 1882 in Ottawa Canada. Peter Lynch Cruice b.cir 1820 Ireland, John Henry (your g grandfather) Eyre Lynch Cruice bapt 2 April 1829 Ballinasloe. Last is Olivia Clarinda Cruice born cir 1832. I have wives and families. I will try to post a tree as an attachment.
Eyre Lynch was at Rathglass in 1837. I suppose he was Matilda's brother.
Interesting about Helena. That might be the Helen Cruise spinster who lived in Dublin that John Joseph Cruice borrowed money from in the form of a mortgage on Briarfield. Where does she fit in? I couldn't find any more about her except unclaimed letters in Australia.
I'm also trying to track my problem by using autosomal DNA.

hello jan thank you for your email. at least i can now start to build a tree of the cruices. have you had your dna done. i have. helena cruice was john henrys sister.she is the first daughter that i have. it would be good to find who the other sisters were. are you from william cruice and mary skerrett. lovely to hear from you. pat

Thanks Pat
I realised after my last post that it was Frances Cruise who held the mortgage on Briarfield not Helen. Sorry for the mistake. Frances went to Australia between 1843 and 1853 and was living in Melbourne but after that there is no sign of her.
I did my DNA with FamilyTreeDNA and transferred data to MyHeritage. You must have found my tree. What company did you test with?
The problem that I have is that William Cruice seems to have married twice and the first wife, Maria Cruice has been forgotten. She would be the mother of the children.
In DNA I'm a fan for using the x chromosome as a tool. I match with another distant relative on the X chromosome and by using her tree and my tree it seems that we are probably matching on the X through William's wife. The common ancestor would be Maria's mother or her paternal grandmother.
Maria H Cruice wife of William Cruice is buried next to or with Peter Cruice of Springlawn at Mount Bellew, so either she or William would be from the same family as you, but probably from Peter's second wife Eliza Donelan. Jan

hello jan thank you for youremail. i did my dna with ancestry. i use them quite a lot together with find my past. i stopped using my heritage because they didnt seem to have many records. i havent seen your family tree williams wife was mary skerrett. i think that she had a brother edward .you probably have these details. william married mary o 12/2/1827. i know about 2 sons that they had. one waspeter joseph born 1831 and the other was daniel william, born 1834. i dont know about any others. do you live in ireland. pat

I puzzled about William's wife, Mary. My family didn't know her identity but after seeing a record on findmypast.ie I found he was married to Mary Skerrett. I did a lot of research on the Skerretts but always in the back of my mind was the possiblity that he had married earlier to Maria Cruice, and now, since more and more information is online, I have found several records that seem to confirm that he did.
Maybe we could continue the conversation by email. Here is an address, f.janbarnes@gmail.com

I'd like to invite you to join the East Galway genealogy group https://www.facebook.com/groups/eastgalwaygenealogy
The Cruice family came into Gallagh in the 1830s I believe
The O'Kellys had moved to Tycooley after being dispossessed of thsoe lands in the 17th century
on gedmatch we also have an East Galway Ancestor which will help identify further connections
