I'm hoping someone can help get more info on my Great Great Grandfather/Mother. My great grandfather Edmond (Edmund) Dunphy married Mary Power on 12 February 1872 at the church in Newtown, Kilmacthomas Co. Waterford. Mary Power is sometimes shown as Mary Catherine Power in our records. The marriage certificate shows her father as James Power and family anecdotal history has her mother as Yvonne Juliette Hubert a French lady who came to work in the area. Edmond was born in March 1844 and we assume Mary would have been born around 1840 to 1860. Edmond's father was Henry Dunphy and one of his sons is my Grandfather Maurice Dunphy 1883 to 1974. The marriage certificate shows Edmond as living in Rathanny and Mary in Ballyvarden, Waterford. I cannot find any record of the birth of Mary or any information at all on her father James or mother, (assuming she was in fact Yvonne Hubert). Is anyone able to point me in the right direction to get info on Mary, James and/or Yvonne?

The RC parish would be Kill/Rossmore https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1110  Marriages occurred in the bride's parish. We don't know if Mary Catherine was baptized in this parish or not.

The subscription site Roots Ireland does not have any baptismal records for Power children with father James and mother with the maiden name of Hubert anywhere in Ireland.

Power/Powers is a very common surname in Co. Waterford. I found two records in the mid-1840s in Kill/Rossmore. There many other records in other parishes in Co. Waterford.

Mary Power baptized June 2 1845 in Kill/Rossmore father James Power and mother Honor Ryan

Mary Power baptized March 18 1847 in Kill/Rossmore father James Power mother Joanna Driscil

You may want to consider DNA testing.

  • thank you Roger. Yes the Powers are hard to track down being a very common name. My Mother was Josephine Power too! The info on Hubert came from a memory by one of my US ancesters so may have been incorrect. I will check out the other two baptisms you mentioned to see if in fact one of them is the correct James Power. My wife has done her DNA but I have not so far. Incidentally I was born in Kill, Kilmacthomas on the Gardenmorris estate where my Father worked at the time.

  • To add to the case that there were a lot of Mary Powers,  my gg grandmother Mary Powers (b 1835)  married mm gg grandfather Hugh Dunphy (b 1844) in 1863 ( Hospital and Herbertstown Limerick?) They soon after moved to NYC where he became a cop.  I would love to know more about their roots in Ireland.  His obituary in the Irish newspaper said he was from Tipperary- and family lore is that Mary was from the Waterford area.  Hugh passed in 1911and Mary seems to have passed in about 1899.  thanks for any help...

  • sorry TC I didn't see your comment until recently. I cannot help but if you lodged a new post with this information, I am sure one of the volunteers would be able to help you. My Dunphy ancestors all seem to be from Waterford.
