Anne Mason b?? 1800 married Peter McCoy/McKoy 1824 Ahascragh Galway. According to their marriage record it says she is from Ballybane/Booleybane Galway. I believe they were Presbyterian. A son Thomas born 1832 in Ballinasloe Galway. I have done the DNA test with Ancestry. I am not really sure where these people originated from! If any thing is remotely familiar to anyone I would be happy to hear from you.

  • Hi Dawnie,

Subscription site - www.rootsireland.ie - has a record of an "Ann Mason" being baptised in Rahoon on May 14th 1812. She was Roman Catholic.

Her father was John Mason, a soldier. Rahoon is on the Western side of Galway city. Ballybane is on the Eastern side and close to the Military barracks. Marriage record for Peter McCoy and Ann Mason not found.

The name "McCoy" is not that common in County Galway. It is also recorded as "Coy" and can also be found in the adjoining county of Roscommon.

The name "Mason" is recorded in County Galway and are Church of Ireland.

Can you post the exact detail of their marriage record?

    Regards,

  • Hi Dawnie,

I attach copy of records for Ahascragh parish for the years 1813 - 1837.

The address is "Boolebane" and is in the parish of Ahascragh. The Tithe record has a Francis Mason there.

There is also the marriage of Hannah Mason in 1815 to James Brophy. You will need to direct your search to the parish of Ahascragh.

  • McCoy,

Thank you for answering my call for help and all the info you have posted. I will have a look at the Parish records for Ahascragh as suggested.

Not sure on my Ann being Catholic! What are the chances of a Catholic marrying a C of I in 1824? Not confirmed but my McCoy's possibly came from Armagh! Any suggestions to confirm my Peter McCoy was in the RIC as was noted on certificates of his son Thomas here in Australia, as well as being a carpenter and muscian?

Regards from one McCoy to another!

  • Hi Dawnie,

I have checked the list of RIC Members - 1816 to 1922 by Jim Herlihy - 1997.

There is no "Peter McCoy/McKoy" recorded there.

     McCoy - Andrew - No. 1886 to William - 56893 - 41 entries

    McKoy - John No. 10280 - I entry

    Mason: Albert - No. 73828 to Wingfield G. - 34 entries

    Meason: Francis No. 25940 - 1 entry

    Meason: Michael - No. 12393 - 1 entry

Perhaps you would consider posting what information you have, as there were Revenue police and Dublin Metropolitan poilce who are not recorded in this register.

    Best Wishes,
