Im desperately searching for any information regarding Matthew and Mary REILLY (yes I know its a very common surname) from in/near Ballyjamesduff in County Cavan who gave birth to my G-Grandfather Hugh REILLY around 1849 and who travelled, with a year or so, to Australia.

They settled in South Australia but am unable to find the ship they arrived in Australia or any details regarding their family.

Im travelling (with my husband and adult son) to County Cavan and staying in Farnham 15-18 August.  Would be grateful if anybody can point me in the right direction for more information either about the family or the history of the area.

With thanks

Ballyjamesduff is in the civil parish of Castlerahan which is in south Co. Cavan near the Co. Meath border. The related RC parish is Castlerahan and Munterconnaught.

Records for this RC parish go way back to around 1752. However, from the index to the parish register, there is a gap in records from May 1841 to August 1854, Likely someone misplaced the register book for that period and those records including the marriage record for Matthew and Mary and the baptismal record for Hugh are lost.

Here is a link to the parish register   https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0821

Do you have any idea regarding the year of Matthew's birth? I ask because the 1821 census for Castlerahan parish is available on the National Archives site and I did see a five year old Mathew Reilly living with a Thomas Lynch family  http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1821/Cavan/Castlerahan/Rossuddin/10/

I looked at the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing which was compiled around 1855 after Matthew and family had left. As you would expect there were many Reilly households but there were only five Cahill households. There were four in Kildorragh Glebe townland: Bartholomew Cahill, Peter Cahill, Terence Cahill and Patrick McCahill. There was also a Laurence Cahill in Carrickavee townland. Likely Mary was the daughter of one of these Cahills,
