Looking for information on Maurice Scanlon born around 1800 in Rathkeale, Limerick. 2 of his daughters, Catherine and Mary, migrated to Australia(Hobart, Tasmania) in 1854 aboard the ship, "Columbus." The daughter's mother was Catherine ?? Catherine was born about 1831 and Mary about 1833. Would be pleased for any assistance. John Murfett, Australia.

John,
Attached property record of a Maurice Scanlan in the Townland of Robertstown, County Limerick c1852.
Subscription site www.rootsireland.ie has a marriage record of a Maurice Scanlon and Bridget Duggan in the parish of Kilcornan in February 1832. Witnesses: John McDonnell and Catherine Nolan.
The same Site has a record of the baptism of Ellen Scanlon in Kilcornan December 10th 1838. Sponsors: Stephen Duggan and Maria Condon.
There is also a record of the baptism of Catherine Duggan in 1841 and Johanna Duggan in 1844. Parents: Maurice Scanlan and Bridget Duggan. The parish is named "Cappagh" in the Union of Rathkeale.
Those records are available on www.catholicparishregisters@nli.ie - National Library - Free Site It can be difficult to decipher the writing!

John:
There is another family in the same parish that McCoy located records (Kilcornan). Father was Maurice Scanlan and mother Catherine Christy. The subscription site Roots Ireland has baptismal records for five children:
Catherine baptized July 4 1830
Patrick baptized January 27 1832
Maria baptized March 29 1834
Hana baptized October 5 1837
Ellen baptized March 14 1841
I did not locate the marriage record.

Thank you to McCoy and Roger McDonnell for their assistance. I feel the Maurice Scanlon that I'm looking for could be Maurice Scanlon and Catherine Christy and the 5 mentioned children. This being so due to previous information indicating that Maurice married a Catherine "C". I believe the "C' part was very clouded and unabled to be worked out. Of the 5 children, Maria could well have been handled as Mary and close to what I believed to be birth year. Throw in Catherine, being older than Maria, born 1830 as against my 1831 date and this is my best lead yet. I have discovered a Maurice Scanon of Cappagh using the 1814-1855 Ireland Tithe Applotment Books which probably would be appropriate from McCoy's information. I have experienced considerable difficulty in following my Irish roots. Both my grandmothers' family lines are Irish.Thank you both. Much appreciated, John.
