Looking for Mayclim, perhaps originally from County Armagh, around Keady. But they settled in to Silverstream, just across the border. Cavanreagh. In Armagh, they are also known as Meaklim.

Robert Mayclim (I think) is my g-g-grandfather who married Margaret Benson. They had 6 children: Margaret, Robert, John, James, Samuel, & Ann. As far as I know. I believe Robert stayed in Ireland. Margaret went to Ohio between 1854 & 1858. James & John went to US in May, 1859, Samuel went to Australia c. 1865-6, & Ann went to Ohio c. 1864-70.

James was my g-grandfather who fought in US Civil War. Can't find John. Misspelling of surname rampant: Mazelim, Maydim, Maclan, Maklim, etc. To confuse matters more, name in US is pronounced Macklim/Macklin & there are a number of Macklins from that same area who are NOT, to my knowledge, related. The Mayclims in Ireland are Protestant & the Macklins there are Catholic.

  • I have looked at the tithe applotment records and other records for the Keady area but cannot find any reference to this family in that parish.

In 1901 there was only 1 Mayclim family in Ireland. They were born in and lived in Belfast and were Presbyterian. There were 3 Meaklim households. They all lived in Co. Monaghan:

They were also all Presbyterian, save for 1 Church of Ireland.

The tithes for Drumneil (Clontibret parish) list a Robert Mayklein in 1830. That appears to be the only family farming in the county at that date. Perhaps that’s yours? (You say there was a Robert who stayed in Ireland). There was also a Robert Meaklin listed there in Griffiths in 1860. The 1901 census family in Drumneil could be connected to him.

Robert Meaklin of Drumneil married Ann Eliza McBride on 26.11.1874 in Keady Church of Ireland. His father was John Meaklin, farmer. Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church and she appears to have lived in Racarbry which is in the parish of Keady. So that explains the Keady connection.

I can’t find any Meaklim etc in Cavanreagh. There are two Cavanreaghs in Co. Monaghan – in the parishes of Tehallan and Currin -  but there are no Meaklim etc in either in Griffiths or the tithes.

I am not sure which Presbyterian church the Drumneil family would have attended. There are several in the area. Clontibret 1st has baptism records from 1825, Clontibret 2nd from 1858, Monaghan 1st 1821 & Monaghan 2nd from 1802. And there are a few others nearby too. Copies of all those records can be found in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast.

    Dan MayclinElwyn,

My apologies for not replying sooner (unless I did – simply can't remember). Your reply was quite informative. The Mayclims & Meaklims are the same family, as far as I can tell. It's a bit of a long-ish tale which I'd be glad to tell in an email if you're interested. Just send me an email @ k55@ebold.com & I'll respond. I greatly appreciate your assisstance. It is truly amazing & inspiring to receive such wonderful & helpful information. I'm hopeful I can be of help to someone else.

From California, with respect & admiration,

    Dan Mayclin
